First off, having read some of the other reviews, there seems to be some confusion here… This restaurant does NOT have, and has never had, a Michelin star. Stars are awarded to specific restaurants, not to chains. The Hawker Chan on Smith Street in Singapore (presumably the original though I haven’t actually checked that) held a star from 2016-2019 (which it has now lost). There wasn’t even a Michelin guide in Malaysia during this time.
Now on to the actual food…
It was a bit of a mixed bag. The soya sauce chicken was quite tender and had decent flavour - nice but nothing special. The roast pork had nice crispy skin but I found the meat itself too dry. My personal favourite was the char siew which was very fatty (probably too fatty for some) and covered in a nice thick, sticky sauce. The rice, however, was probably the worst I’ve eaten in Malaysia… and worse than most places I’ve eaten anywhere. It tasted dry and old and I had to cover it in the sauce from the roast meat platter and soya sauce from the vegetable dish in order to eat it. I have no idea how they can mess up plain white rice that bad.
I would have happily given this place 4 stars had it not been for the rice. You can certainly enjoy a decent meal here… as long as you don’t want...
Read moreHonestly, this place is as disappointing as it gets. Hawker chan, once famously the first Hawker to get a Star, has unfortunately only declined since then. After losing the star and its overall quality throughout its rapid expansion in Singapore, i guess it was time to try it in Malaysia.
I have been many times at the original location and some of the newer places of the brand that were opened later. I tried a variety of dishes.
The thai style tofu was fried to death and tasteless. The sprouts cooked to death, hence watery with no flavor. The rice as well, not dressed up like the original, blend and overcooked. The star of the show, a portion of chicken-(bones mostly), though in texture with little resemblance to the flavorful and juicy original. Not even a competition for the basic chicken rice shop that is nearby. There a tons of places in kl that serve better soy chicken, and amazing ones in Ipoh, the hometown of hawker chan.
Staff were mostly on the phone and gave an unmotivated performance. The location overall is depressing and the whole experience was dissatisfying. I cannot recommend this place at all. At least it is...
Read moreOh my oh my. I was doing some visiting here and why not go try this one star Michelin restaurant which is Hawker Chan from Singapore.
I ordered the Steamed Rice with Char Siew & Fried Egg and I expected to get my dish with a claypot in it and picture enclosed herewith showing that it’s on a plate. It’s very disappointing. Char Siew was ok and eggs was ok. The dish was good enough but I believe and there are many good char siew elsewhere which I don’t recommend you come here la. The dish I gave a so so 6.1.
Then the curry kapitan pork rice. It was good curry dish but price I paid they gave quite a lot of potatoes in it and not a lot of pork which also dissatisfied with a mark of 5.7.
Then they saving grace dish was Roasted Pork Noodle which the pork was tender and crispy. Noodle was good and bouncy and I give 7.4. However I ordered the teh ice which was a disaster. No tea taste no milk taste. Mixed with lot of water and it’s tasteless with a score of 1.2!!! Will...
