Someone on a night tour told me about Lai Foong and their "Lala" (Clams) Noodles so today I made a beeline from my hotel to try it out.
On a hot and humid Thursday late morning, there was no line at 11:40am. I sat down and the guy who ushered me in assumed I could speak chinese and said some stuff. Before I could say anything, he left but came back with a few menus with pictures and then said some more words that included "QR Code" which I got. I got my phone out, scanned the QR code on my table and I was on my way.
I ordered the A3 the signature lala noodles. The one people said got them a Michelin star.
I got my drink fairly quick but my noodles took about 10 minutes to arrive. It was a huge steaming bowl chock full of clams and 2 prawns cut in half lengthwise. It looked dauntingly huge. I dug in. The soup was a little spicy and I could taste the ginger, the garlic and the cooking wine in the seafoody broth. It was good especially since I was working on getting over a cold.
The noodles were perfectly al dente and there was a lot of them. The clams were all opened and the shrimp was tasty with the heads full of butter. Everything was awesome but then it was just more of the same. I think the portion's a bit on the large side, perhaps to justify the 34RM price. As I dug through the clams, I felt myself wanting something else, maybe some crunch from a vege or something meaty to dig into. The clams, and there were so many I couldn't finish them, just didn't provide the meat I was looking for.
All in all, it was very good and I was stuffed. Total came to $44 RM with a sour plum lemon ice drink which was interesting and tasty. I'm glad I tried it. Would I get it again, maybe not, but I;d like to try some of the...
Read moreFriend been keep telling me how good is Lai Foong lala… so I decided to give it a try. My first visit to Lai Foong was two years ago in uptown damansara branch. Bad experienced with almost half of the bowl of lala was dead and not fresh at all! So I informed the cashier to look into their kitchen when prepare lala, too much of dead lala where the shell is closed not open! I’m not asking for a refund or free meal. Just in mind of food safety and standard procedure… Look like the owner at the restaurant don’t care at all. He didn’t apologise and just not even informed the kitchen that their Lala got problem. The attitude is like I have a long queue customers in line, if you dislike can just walk away. I banned the uptown branch after! Last weekend relative visit in Kl. We want a quick lunch, hence I gave a try again at the original shop. Maybe the original shop where friend visited is good… Lala served fast. But my bowl of noodle doesn’t look appetite appear to me. Again, the Lala is not fresh and taste fishy, some of the shell not open. I didn’t finish the big bowl of noodle, only take some! It’s ruined my how dining experience again! Really disappointed how this place was awarded as Michelin star restaurant! Sorry to say this, I guess people never eat the fresh Lala before, so they feel this is the best to them. After back to home, I have 3 times diarrhoea, lucky I didn’t ate a lot of the bad Lala!
To me I would prefer Mingkee Seafood Noodle Lala beehon. Broth far more flavourful and beehon is better quality than this place! Won’t recommended Lai Foong! It’s tourist trap and lousy lala...
Read moreSuper chuffed my first meal in KL was this Lala Prawn Bihun 生虾啦啦米 (RM28 / S$8.30) from the well-known Lai Foong Lala Noodles. 😊👍
This was a fairly sizeable portion, meant I believe for sharing, cos it came chock full of clams & 2 prawns 🦐 bathing in a large bowl of vermicelli & piping hot broth.
Speaking of which, the majorly savoury & robust, lusciously orangey prawny broth assaulted my senses from the very first sip I took (and I mean it in a good way). 😂 I was totally unprepared. 🤣 It was umami to the point of being…salty. The ginger slices definitely gave it lots of zing. It seemed herby, but to my surprise, they told me that there were no herbs in there. I half expected Angelica root or something haha. Suffice to say, I finished the whole bowl of soup. I’m sure it was MSG-laden, but I welcomed it wholeheartedly cos it felt so shiok. And furthermore it was my first official meal in KL.
The clams — although small — were sweet & fresh. They say that the larger the clams, the less sweet they are. The reverse was true for these cutie clams. The prawns had gorgeous roe too, which I delightedly exclaimed “oh got lovely roe, so these are female prawns!” (Hahaha yes I was Captain Obvious 😆)
This is a Michelin Guide restaurant, so we thought we’d check it out. Nubbad. Would I recommend others to try it? Yep I would indeed, esp if they’ve never...
