usually i don’t leave comments/reviews after i dine at a place. considering that i’ve spent RM400+ so i guess i am entitled to give my two cents on how the tokyo restaurant can improve their services. the whole idea of dining in the tokyo restaurant was to celebrate my partner’s birthday and our anniversary.

i will start with the things that i enjoyed and liked in the tokyo restaurant:

i can just easily reserved a spot through a website - umai. plus, it allows me to edit my reservation timing. this is very convenient as i did ran into a bad traffic jam around bukit bintang area 30 minutes before my reservation was due. so the website allows me to make amendments on the timing.

friendly staff - really appreciate how helpful Adam was. from explaining the whiskey and sake to answering our queries on the seasonal item. the rest are as helpful as Adam too.

food and dessert were good, all the taste are on point but its a little bit too salty for me but my partner love it all. (so for those who likes strong flavours, it is highly recommended!)

things that can be improved:

please read the remarks on your umai website. i actually wrote in the remarks that i am here for the celebration of my partner’s birthday and our anniversary. in my note, i also stated that i hope the tokyo restaurant could assist me in making it the best for us. but when i arrived, i was brought to a normal table as if its just another normal customer that reserved through their designated website.

i planned this dinner to surprise my partner but then i have to again approach to one of the floor staff that it was my partner’s birthday and our anniversary. so it didn’t look like a surprise anymore. which all these were not supposed to happen if they read my remarks!

in my opinion, if you put up a remark column and a drop down for us to choose on the occasion but don’t honour the customer’s request then its better that you don’t include such thing. it doesn’t feel great to have expectations and yet nothing happened.

i like the ambience and music but the surroundings is very dark. i won’t even use dim to describe but dark. yes there’s a table light provided on the table but its not fully charged and i can’t adjust the brightness. me and my partner literally have to turn on our phone’s flashlight when we were looking at the menu.

consistency - in one of the point where i mentioned i love their convenience on how i can make reservations online and edit my reservations time. there’s one important factor that kind of turns me of a little. which is that i wanted to come and try their dinner set menu where i found it on their webpage, but when i asked about it yesterday. they said that its no longer available as they are making a new set of menu.

in my opinion, yes cool! making new ones to attract more customers. but please update your webpage and not let it be like that.

these are my two cents of last night’s dinner. i hope in the future the tokyo restaurant will make some improvements.

would i come back? well most probably not. it is a nice one time thing but i guess...

Been here too many times in the last 1 month.

While the food has been consistently good, the only thing that put me off is the service.

The umami fries served during dinner service has always been a hit with friends. The beef curry has always been a staple in my dinner orders. The yellowtail carpaccio is also a staple.

I am quite let down by the deteriorating customer service. Not really service as in the food arriving late or not warm, just the general attitude of the waiters.

I had 3 different incidents whereby the waiter actually treated us a little too friendly; talked too much about his background. I understand that he is proud of the team and that they were all young and hardworking, however I do NOT appreciate being treated in an extremely friendly manner. ‘Kak, kak’.

At least address patrons as ‘miss or cik or puan’. We are NOT friends. I have never met you and I am NOT a friend. I did NOT come to Tokyo Restaurant to have a chat with the waiters, I am here with friends for other affairs.

Also, please refrain from describing the food as ‘nasi goreng pattaya’. This waiter has described to my table ‘Ala tu macam nasi goreng pattaya je’ and yesterday when we dined one of the waiter literally handed a plate of the omurice and said ‘dah sampai nasi goreng pattaya’

I was absolutely livid. We’re eating at a nice restaurant with Japanese-inspired decor, do you REALLY have to ruin my experience by saying such a thing?

I have found this behaviour to be extremely unprofessional. I feel that Tokyo Restaurant should retrain the staff into understanding and learning basic customer service etiquettes.

Also, please teach and educate the waiters on how to explain dishes in a more professional way instead of saying ‘bagi saya kak ikan yellowtail tu rasa pelik’ .

While yes I asked for recommendations, I do not appreciate statements like that. That could have easily been managed by saying ‘ Kalau cik biasa makan ikan selain salmon, saya recommend makan yellow tail. Tapi kalau tak biasa dan tak rasa nak try ikan lain, boleh makan salmon sushi roll kita’

Or at least something along the lines of ‘salmon sushi lebih banyak orang order berbanding yellowtail’

I feel that would’ve been a better explanation.

I really hope Tokyo Restaurant takes my review and feedback with an open heart. I am probably dining there again for a business meeting and hope that there would be...

If I could give them zero stars, I would, because they don't even deserve a one star.

Our dining experience at the Tokyo restaurant in KL was disappointing. We arrived at 5:30 PM and politely requested a table for four, excited to try the famous Imperial Wagyu Beef Curry. The concierge surprisingly asked us to wait for availability, despite most tables being unoccupied. We felt judged by the server, who scrutinised our simple attire without a smile and look at us from head to toe.

Though the restaurant had sufficient staff with five servers and a cashier, the service was subpar. We felt discriminated against compared to the more attentive treatment given to another table. Once seated, we spent 15 minutes trying to catch a server’s attention. The kitchen staff eventually had to prompt the front desk, but the servers remained inattentive, engrossed in conversation with each other. The server only responded when the other table called for service, leaving us feeling overlooked and humiliated.

When we ordered, the server was quite rude, offering no greeting and standing silently. I placed our order, anticipating our food.

We had three sets of Imperial Wagyu, carbonara, three foie gras, tacos, a matcha cheesecake, and two tiramisus. The server brought dessert without any courtesy, placing it on our table without adjusting cutlery, eventually she waited us to arrange it ourselves. When the main dishes arrived, she waited for us to move the empty plates instead of clearing them herself. It felt like we were paying for nonexistent service.

It worsened when we asked for ice water and were told they don't serve it (she even laughed sarcastically laughed like “hello this is high end restaurant we do not serve ice water”). Then I requested still water instead, specifying a large one with ice. Despite this, we never received it and noticed the table behind to us got their drinks promptly. It seems she either forgot my order immediately or intentionally chose not to remember it.

The food was disappointing: the Imperial Wagyu Beef Curry lacked flavour (tasteless, stagnant), the carbonara was VERY VERY & SO SO salty, though the tiramisu and foie gras were good. However, the poor service left us questioning their 4.5-star rating in google. Never come back and do not recommend this restaurant. Maybe the amount we spent RM403.70 is just too...

Maybe the amount we spent RM403.70 is just too low for them.
