Passed by this Nonya restaurant a few weeks ago and decided to check it out today. The restaurant looks gorgeous from outside and even more intriging from inside. Tastefully decorated with antique furniture, it brings patrons back a hundred years into history.
Had a classic pie tee for starters. The tart shell were crunchy and tasty. They are a little bigger than usual, which helps to stuff more fillings for the bite. I think adding a piece of shrimp into each shell would make it more delicious. A little cucumber shreds would lighten the dish too.
Tried their Chicken Pong Teh, a chicken dish wirh potato cooked in fermented bean sauce and soy sauce. The gravy was delicious, but the chicken meat was a little chewy.
Paku (wild vegetable) cooked in coconut milk brought back memories of childhood. The gravy pairs well with rice. In Nonya restaurants, I always go with their beautiful blueish butterfly-pea flower rice.
Concluded the meal with a red bean dessert with tamarind grind. Greatly satisfying. The tamarind grind balanced out the sweet and heavy red bean. The purpose of the tamarind here is similar to adding Bergamot to tea leaves in making Earl Grey - giving a citric kick to the palate.
Instead of ordering soup, I went with a clove tea in a pot. Interesting as I recently read about the health benefits.
Overall a pleasant meal in a nostalgic ambience. Can...
Read more"Warong Old China" is a Baba Nyonya restaurant operated by the same ownership as "Old China Cafe". Offering authentic Baba and Nyonya cuisine, complemented by exquisite cultural decor, furnishings, and music, dining here feels like a journey through time and space—a sensory delight.
Although the service staff may lack some finesse, their friendly and helpful attitude exudes the rustic charm of yesteryears.
We indulged in three signature Baba Nyonya dishes: Chicken Lobak, Ayam Buah Keluak, and Kerabu Lady's Finger. The restaurant spares no expense on ingredients, evident in the rich, authentic flavours. Personally, I relished the "Ayam Buah Keluak (Braised Chicken with Black Fruit)", featuring tender meat paired with black fruits known for their detoxifying properties. It's a heavenly delight, a must-try for tourists, especially those from abroad.
Despite its compact size, the bathroom upholds strict hygiene standards and boasts elegant decor.
While finding parking may pose a challenge, easy access to public transportation and the proximity to Petaling Street (established by Kapitan Yap Ah Loy, a historic area of Kuala Lumpur) make parking a bit further away worthwhile, offering a deeper...
Read moreMy wife who is a Nyonya was craving for peranakan food. Googled this place. Ambience and service was great. I’m sorry for being blunt but food wasn’t. Please note that we are doing a review from an authentic Nyonya person.
We came as a family. Ordered pong teh, kai lan vege, Assam prawn, itik tim, rendang, fish garam asam and Pamelo salad.
Pong teh - chicken wasn’t fresh. Asked to change. We changed to fish garam asam which was ok. Kai lan - was ok Assam prawn - not fresh Itik Tim - is a sour version. I’ve never tasted such version. It was just ok. Nothing like the authentic one I had before. Rendang - was quite good but served a little cold. They should have at least heated it up before serving. Portion was very small too. Pamelo salad - for me it’s the best!
Drinks: My son complaint that his orange juice was watery. My Chinese tea - was like expected, how different can it be. Good.
I would not recommend this place if you are looking for an authentic Peranakan food. It was disappointing.
However the service by the foreign waiters was good. The place is very instagramable....
