I’ve been waiting for a few weeks for Hock Kee KD to open, and today we finally got to try it. We’ve never been to their JB branch and have never heard of the franchise before so we can’t compare it. I also told myself prior to the visit that I’ll do them justice by not comparing them with other similar restaurants too. I guess being a franchise restaurant, the quality can’t go wrong too much, and you can tell by just walking into their restaurants that, as small as just their menu, food choices, to the interior and their product display (they sell packets of coffee too), that it’s not their “first time opening restaurant” even though to the this particular branch owner it may be.
I’m also not a great food critic so the only thing that can very quickly help me decide if they’re worth 5 stars was — the service.
Hock Kee has chosen the right team to serve. Their workers are very well trained; very observant, polite and smiley. I’m not a “customer is king” person so I find their service really way more atas than what I paid for, haha!
The first impression of a restaurant is usually made at the waiting line in front. They have chosen the right person to serve in the front too. If I remember the name correctly, the worker that served at the front today was Hanif (?) from Bangladesh. He spoke fluent English, very polite, and had the calm and respectful attitude; that itself was enough for me to say: ok I’ll wait! Even though I was tired and hungry , haha!
For the pricing, I would say you can’t compare it with Young Sanna Mee or even the other restaurant like Oriental Kopi etc. they are different. And for the service and the location, I’d say the price is ok.
We ordered a weird combination of food just to try: cheesy wedges (my husband said it’s good, like KFC, I think that’s the highest compliment you can give ), mee siam (which I think was great but my husband said portion is a little small), ABC ais kacang (as a Penang lang, I approve!!), and a steam kaya toast (which was my least favourite, because of the weird smell from the bread).
Overall, the experience was great and yes I will come back to try other things...
Read moreWas there on Saturday evening for dinner, waited just 5 minutes before being shown to our table. I ordered porridge with salted egg while other half ordered nasi lemak + fried chicken
Drinks were served relatively fast even though it's full house, that's good. Then it began to go downhill from there...
I notice how well trained your servers are wiping the tables but you need to get their eyes to look at the floor. It's very dirty everywhere with food and trash! Come on, pick up a broom and sweep them clean la
Wife's nasi lemak came, presentation and portion wise was good but the temperature was bad, both the rice and chicken were lukewarm and that's not good. WHY? Kitchen not working?
Worst then happened! After waiting for 20 minutes I was told all porridge dishes are not available because they are sold out. What? Why don't you guys blur it out in the QR ordering page or inform me earlier? You need 20 minutes to find out? Then what's the point of your high tech ordering QR system?
Lost my appetite and just ordered a bun and left!
By the way, your cashier can definitely do a better job. There is no one paying behind me, at least ask how is your food? Offer a discount for my 20 minutes' wait for nothing. Also, you guys sell so many packed things on the counter/cashier, the cashier can at least ask if you guys want anything, we have this and that. Nope, nothing.
So I guess it's goodbye and not...
Read moreIt’s a Sunday and we decided to give Hock Kee Kopitiam a try. A little out of the way from our usual route but well, a little adventure doesn’t hurt, right? We were quite apprehensive of finding a parking spot as this area (Dataran Sunway) is often very busy but we managed to find one just directly opposite the shop. Must be our lucky day, I guess. We ordered Steamed Chicken Rice, Satay Fried Kuey Teow, Big Breakfast, Nasi Lemak with Sunny Side Egg, Egg Tart and finished off with Barley and ABC. The helpings were a bit of a surprise as it did little justification to the photos in the menu. Well, of course, the menu is for illustration purposes – and the portions do seem a bit larger compared to the actual food (hahaha). The Steamed Chicken Rice tasted like any other chicken rice stalls – so nothing exceptional there. We were curious about the Satay Fried Kuey Teow but apparently it is just normal fried kuey teow with satay sauce on the side. Well…..I suppose we expected something a bit more unique …… our bad actually. The Nasi Lemak and Big Breakfast tasted normal as well. The egg tart on the other hand, is quite good. The ABC (Ais Batu Campur) came nicely decorated but looked rather small though. Overall, sweet and nice for a good...
