As a long life fan of the PJ State original branch, I was super excited for the nostalgic bite but, alas, it was not as good as the original branch in PJ State, mainly due to the gravy.
Not sure whether it is a different soy sauce used or too much soy sauce, the savory balance is much more superior in the original branch in PJ State for sure. 30+ years fan can already notice from the difference in the color of the gravy as it was so much darker in this Kota Damansara branch.
Otherwise, the fragrant rice and the chili sauces/sambal were on point and on par with the original branch. First time trying out the braised pork belly but the five spice is a bit overbearing and braise gravy wasn’t deep enough.
Usually a huge fan of the gizzards and intestines as well but the gravy was not on point. The pickled vegetables were savorily good, similar to the one in the original branch and I hope they would bring the middle size version as well here. Small thing but we miss the proper julienned scallions and coriander leaves mixture garnished as well as more cucumber slices that we had in original branch vs this new branch.
I think we would go back to the original branch when we yearn for the Kam Heong braised duck rice and the original branch also has the satay combo, that we would enjoy together as well for years.
Nevertheless, the cleanliness of this branch and the AC is definitely welcomed but unless the gravy get to the original branch’s level, we don’t think we would come back here and we are ready to drive further to the original branch. Hope the management would hear this long life fan of the original Kam Heong...
Read moreBeen hearing this name for many years, but somehow never got to try until they opened up a new branch in Kota Damansara recently.
Went in on a Sunday afternoon post lunch hours. Not busy, and street parking is ample.
Of course we have to order the braised duck. Went for the breast meat, and added a few other dishes like peanuts, pork intestine, bean curd, pork knuckle and vegetable.
The braised duck is good, it’s not too salty or strong but yet the braised taste (卤味) is there. Intestines are good as well, no foul smell, and it’s soft. Pork knuckle and bean curd is above average. And best part is you even can choose the level of fattiness for the pork knuckle! And lastly, you can’t really screw up vegetables.
The only thing that I’m not so used to is the peanut. Usually I’m the braised peanut I’ve tasted in other places is on the salty side, but theirs is the sweet type. To be fair, it could be a preference issue in my end rather than the restaurant.
Overall the food is considered good and will definitely visit again during odd hours, as street parking could be challenging during weekdays or dinner/lunch hours in...
