Was a frequent diner in Ippudo back in the days but rarely come after the explosion of ramen choices in the city. Dropped by with the fam and ordered 2 appetisers and two noodles between the 3 of us. In terms of service, would have preferred that the server asked for our preference on when they should serve appetisers and mains rather than assuming. Realised belatedly that they put on the note that appetisers to be served first and we ended up waiting quite a bit for the mains. Not a deal-breaker but we are those typesl who preferred everything to be served at once.
Anyways, the chicken karaage were good, fresh and flavourful. Meat was all thigh meat - and this is our preference. Portion was ok, with 6 pcs and batter was not too thick, so the meat was quite sizable.
Gyoza however was a bit underwhelming. Although they taste great and flavourful, the sizes were on the small side and the fillings were tiny. Skin was good, not too thick but whole 'wrap' was small and kinda deflated with the small filling.
Their Tonkotsu Ramen was good as usual, soup flavourful, not too oily and noodles al dented. No complaints except that the chasu could be better with less fat.
Mazesoba was something new to us. Since we ordered a 'soup' thought wanna give this a try. Overall, the noodles themselves were great, and mixed with the sauce, egg, other ingredients (including pork lard) the whole dish is super flavourful, umami and delish. However, due to the size, it was slightly 'jelak' and this was shared between 3 people. Of course we also had the tonkotsu already but still ...
Would prefer to have this Mazesoba in terms of unique-ness, taste and something different. It's very unlike Tsukemen as it does not have the dipping broth. Taste wise, it can be slightly salty for some who doesn't like their food to be too...
Read moreThe menu here has a lot less food selection than the other Ippudo restaurants. I suspect this is because they just recently opened. But don't worry, they still have all the essential items (ramen, pork bun, sashimi).
The sashimi was great. Thick cuts and very fresh. However, I find that the ramen isn't up to par with the other outlets in The Gardens or Pavillion KL. The broth was a little bit too salty, and I feel like it's lacking in depth and flavor. The chashu pork had a rather strong gaminess not present on other outlets, which is either a good or bad thing depending on personal preference. The lean parts of the chashu pork were also a bit tough. Although the fat parts are nicely done and melt in your mouth.
Service has room for improvement but is quite ok. When I visited it was very busy, and the staff were understandably a little bit 'kelam kabut'. They are attentive and will get all your requests correctly.
Overall still a very good ramen place. Hope improvements can be made to bring it to the same level as other Ippudo...
Read moreI would say for me in my limited experience, the richest and most flavorful broth for Ramen in town. One can feel that a lot of bones were boiled for many hours to produce that thick, rich stock which flavors the Ramen. Ordered the Akamaru Shinaji, which is the richer broth flavored with miso, non-spicy. The green onions and woodear mushrooms provides extra flavor accents and texture to the noodles. I ordered my noodles hard, including an extra serving of noodles. Very good texture and very pleasantly chewy, with a most satisfying mouthfeel. I would suggest the extra noodles for everyone, because the normal portion is medium and the extra noodles gives a more complete satisfaction to the meal. The decoration is very reminiscent of Japanese culture, very natural bamboo colors which brings a very peaceful feeling. There are plenty of staff around to serve the customers, which is good. Price is on the premium side, well, it's a premium place and a premium product. Overall, a good...
