I’ve waited a long time to write this review, because I wanted to be sure about whether it was even meaningful to do so. The people that run this place are lovely, the place is very well regarded in the community, and the people who love this place ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I think it caters to expats and people who vacation in PV regularly.
We are well traveled through other regions in Mexico, and based on the reviews, we were excited to be able to get a reservation for The Red Cabbage. We didn’t find it difficult to locate. It’s a lovely walk from where we were staying.
The service was great and the drinks were good. The decor is odd, but sort of kitschy cute. The food was okay. The place decidedly caters to Americans and palates that favor a more bland experience. Just like most restaurants in the romantic zone especially, there were no locals in the place.
We didn’t hate anything we had there, but we wouldn’t return. I would say the food quality is on par with a standard chain restaurant in the states. One of the most interesting things about it was the temperature of the foods we were served - all just above room temperature. Nothing was hot. We ordered several menu items to taste things and have some leftovers. We didn’t take the leftovers. The mole was adequate, the chili en Nogado was fine, the peanut soup was good. Nothing was amazing.
So if you’re in town for a month and want to give it a shot just so you can say you did, go for it. But if you’re there for a week, just about anywhere...

This is a bait game-based on past years reviews- I’m sure the place was great 10 years ago…however today when you walk through a ghetto to arrive at a mediocre restaurant that charges 550$ Mexican pesos for 5 grilled shrimp 120$ pesos for a margarita (tiny) 150$ pesos for a cup (tiny) of tortilla soup 170$ salad (mostly iceberg lettuce)and is obviously too embarrassed to post his prices on line because it’s like a joke on the gringos and they would never arrive had they known the prices in advance. Really insulting!!! Grinning the whole time they gauge you! Be careful this is a bad movie happening again and again to polite tourists - Do not spend your hard earned money here they’ll just laugh at you behind closed doors -seriously you will make your bread and butter today CUCO but nobody is coming back after you burn them here at red cabbage cafe! Save your embarrassment before being sucked...
Read moreHoly Mole! (sorry, couldn’t resist 😊) Living in El Remance for the last few weeks I’ve passed this small, very unassuming restaurant every day. Never a hard sell to try and get you to come in, and I can see why - it’s reputation speaks for itself!
I think you can tell a lot about a restaurant from the quality of its house wine, and so the crisp Argentinian Sauvignon Blanc was a good sign. I ordered the Mole Poblanco, and it was excellent - Rich sauce, tender chicken, fluffy rice and tasty refried beans, accompanied by steaming hot tortillas (of which the waiter happily brought more when I ran out).
The decor is fabulous (lots of local art) and the staff were charming, even helping me with my awful Spanish!! I had a wonderful evening and am so glad I stopped by. Highly recommend if...
