This place is paradise for any reader. It is HUGE. There are 3 floors. There's a cafe area on the 2nd with multiple small tables and couches. There is a restaurant/bar on the 3rd floor, and also a small theatre for multiple performances. The calendar is posted on the wall. The ambiance of the whole place feels like a different world. It is cozy and welcoming. We usually spend hours browsing. There's loads of Spanish-language literature, but there is a pretty good selection of English-language literature as well. I read on another review that all the books are sealed in plastic. However, I didn't find this to be true. Some books were, but staff was helpful if we actually wanted to open the books. The vast majority had at least one unsealed copy for customers to read through.

As far as the restaurant (why I'm taking off a star), I ordered the "vienés" coffee, and it was just bland. I've tried it in multiple other coffee shops in Mexico City and it's rather tasty. This time it was pure disappointment. My boyfriend ordered a chai latte, but there was no real chai flavor in there. Starbucks makes a better one! Not what we would expect from such a beautiful bookstore with a high-priced menu. Additionally, the attention from our server was horrible. We've both worked in the service industry so we know how demanding the job can be. However, the place wasn't particularly busy, yet our server seemed bothered to help us. He had a bad attitude, and almost seemed like he wanted to rush us out. Thankfully, we didn't let that ruin...

My neighborhood is so rich in great restaurants, despite all the meat eating, that more often than not I do not make it to where I think I am going because I find another place that I must try. Today it was El Péndulo, which I was going to skip because I could not find their menu online. By serendipity. I found the one on Álvaro Obregón, a beautiful tree lined avenue with a park-like median and much shade. It is a fabulous avenue to take walks on. Breakfast was heaven on earth. I ordered egg on top of a quesadilla de flor de calabaza y otra de huitlacoche. As usual, the flavor of the flor and huitlacoche are very delicate and jealous and are easily hidden when combined with other foods. What stole the show and made me so happy was their mermeladas de flor de jamaica, guayaba and salsa de tamarindo. They could easily make mermerlada de tamarindo. They were so good that I could not leave what was leftover and ate it all by itself when I ran out of bread. It was like a dessert, guayaba and flor de jamaica pudding. Even though I am trying to be disciplined by travelling very light, I had to get these. I do not know if they will make it to Phoenix without my eating them. They are exquisite. Wonder if I can order...

¿Sacarme a patadas?).

This place was so cool! We sat on the top floor of the cafebrería and listened to some live music. The bookstore aspect was freaking awesome, too. The cafe's atmosphere was very welcoming and there were a bunch of really deep and cool quotes everywhere. My friends and I struggled translating some of them but we got there eventually. The waiter we had was pretty patient with us, even though I had a hard time hearing him through the music. I ordered a limonada rosada, which was pretty dang good. We also got some chips and guac. After we ate we had a conversation with the live band that had performed, and they didn't kick us out even though we stayed passed closing. Real cool place for a drink and some laidback club life, if that's what you're into.
