My partner and I went here for a special dinner during our time in Mexico City and were left utterly disappointed. We thought the balcony would be romantic, but the tables were all quite close together so it was loud, the view was pretty lacklustre, and there was a recurring, ear-piercing screech from a cart someone was pushing around on the street below that had multiple people putting their hands over their ears. One of the waiters had the audacity to insist that the sound was actually the call of a regional bird; a laughable attempt to uphold the illusion of us being in a desirable environment.
For drinks, my partner ordered a beer and I got the moscow mule. My moscow mule did not taste at all like a moscow mule; it was more like vodka with lime and soda water, which is fine, but not what I asked for and not worth the 225 or so pesos it cost. For food, I tried to order the lamb, but even though it was only 6:30 pm, the waiter informed me that they were out of it. I had the pork belly instead, which was reasonably good but nothing exceptional and quite small. It had an arugula topping that I had to pick off because of how bitter it was. My partner ordered the crab with the black rice and said that the rice was virtually inedible due to how acidic it was. We are usually dessert people but after our meal, we decided to cut our losses and order the bill.
The service wasn’t great either. The servers insisted in speaking to us in English, but their ability to communicate with us in English was worse than our capacity to communicate with them in Spanish. My partner and I ended up feeling quite frustrated.
Finally, when I used the washroom, the single women’s toilet was broken and wouldn’t flush, and the sink was broken and wouldn’t dispense water. I had to wipe off the soap on my hands with a paper towel. I’ve also read other Google reviews that mention this restaurant contacting people through WhatsApp and offering them money in exchange for a 5 star Google review, even though these people have never even eaten here. I don’t know for sure that this is true but it does seem a little suspicious, and also would explain why this restaurant is rated so exceptionally well. I’d say save your money and go to a taco stand— the food will be better and you won’t have to pay 1500 pesos to go deaf from the ...
Read moreOn our last night in CDMX, we had a reservation at Meroma, and they did not disappoint. We have had some excellent meals while staying in the Roma/Condesa area, but this was our favorite. We are from Los Angeles, and we have a fairly good barometer for food and dining.
I'll just start with the service, which was absolutely fantastic. The wait staff were extremely attentive and available when you needed them. We never had to wait. 5 stars.
We sat upstairs on the outdoor patio---Highly recommend. Also get a reservation in advance.
The Cocktails- We both had 2 different cocktails each. All of them delicious, inventive and extremely well balanced. I'm not sure how much alcohol was in them, but we loved them all. My favorite was Rum Foam (thank me later for the rec).
The Starters- We had the beef tartare, and the cauliflower dishes. Both absolutely delicious. The beef was ground very fine, and the consistency was just the way we like it, and served with 2 wonderfully crusty pieces of bread...excellent. The Cauliflower roasted on bed of lentils and green mole. This was so full of Umami and deliciousness, a tad salty, but if you like salty (like me) it's just fantastic. The Green mole was excellent. A very well balanced dish.
For the Entree- We selected the Butter roasted Organic Half-chicken (recommended for 2), but we were motivated by the sides that it came with-- the roasted purple potatoes and brussel sprouts were served over an umami-filled thin sauce, asian-style scallion pancakes, and a salad with beef-fat vinaigrette. The Chicken was served in four pieces (3 cuts of breast and a leg). It was served atop of such an incredible jus of chicken. Again, more umami flavor popping out. The skin was perfectly crisp and delicious.
For Desert---I had the Afogato, and again... delicious.
Great job to everyone involved in giving us a wonderful last night in Roma. We would absolutely come back again. If you are in Roma anywhere near Calle Colima, you'd be foolish not to check it...
Read moreJust had dinner this evening at Meroma and had high expectations. The restaurant was beautiful and oh so achingly hip. Tghe lamb and fish were both delicious. And the service was friendly. Trouble started, though, when the concierge insisted on booking us at a sidewalk table, saying it was the only table they had. The thing is, when we arrived, their dining room was completely empty (the patio was full though) and only another couple arrived to occupy a second table in an otherwise empty dining room that had 6 or 8 other tables with exactly zero patrons (again only the patio was full). So obviously they wanted us to sit at the sidewalk to make the restaurant seem "full". And then when we got the bill, the waiter remarked "you're only giving us a 3% tip? really, that's all your giving us? normally patrons give us 10%... this is not enough.". Thankfully, another waiter stepped in to tell us that whatever we gave us was enough (although it is customary to give some kind of tip averaging at 10%, restaurant patrons give anywhere from zero to 20% so there is no one standard way or amount to give as a tip in CDMX; which causes endless confusion in this town). So what started as a potentially promising night ended up with a total downer. And added to the fact that the restaurant wasn't really full (and them trying to pretend that it was) just tarnished the whole experience. And then when we left the concierge never even asked us how our experience was. She seemed like she preferred to be elsewhere rather than ask how they did. We really wanted this restaurant to live up to its promise. But some of the staff just refuse to allow this place to truly shine the...
