I've been to Fat Tuesday twice on separate trips to Cozumel. The location and atmosphere of the bar are somewhat alluring to the inebriated souls that pass by, looking for one last round before they must return to their ship. The open, beachy ambiance and promise of New Orleans-style daiquiris just draw you in like some sort of magic spell.
As with any good magic spell, after being suckered in you are cursed with slow service and sub-standard food. I ordered nachos since I was just looking for a bite and I was brought a full-sized to-go box full of over-salted, round tortilla chips covered in ballpark-style nacho cheese. Not what I was expecting. They slightly redeemed themselves by presenting a cup full of freshly-smashed guacamole, but only slightly because it didn't mix well with the orange cheese that made me reminisce of miserable childhood days spent in the stands of the dreaded ballpark. The beers were cold and refreshing, although we didn't venture beyond Dos Equis (when in Rome).
To sum up my experience, I am reminded of the words that a witch doctor of sorts once told me: "Everything that glitters...
Read moreLook, as crew, port days can be a whirlwind. Sometimes you only have a sliver of time to actually feel like you're somewhere other than the ship. Fat Tuesday? It's right there, it's loud, and it screams "vacation vibes" the second you step in. You know the drill – music's pumping, and the place is packed with tourists holding those giant, brightly colored slushy drinks. But as a crew member, sometimes all you want is a solid, cold beer without the fuss. That's the beauty of Fat Tuesday; it's easy. You can grab a few beers for you and a buddy, find a small corner at the bar, and just soak in the energy for a little while. It's a quick, concentrated dose of "off-duty" without the stress of complicated logistics or wasting time looking for a spot that's less chaotic. Just be smart about it, right? Know your limits and your ship's schedule. Fat Tuesday is great for a quick shot of fun and a taste of the port life, but remember you've got responsibilities. Get a little taste of the craziness, enjoy a couple of beers, and then head back to your floating home. It's the perfect way to squeeze a bit of fun into a...
Read moreUnpleasant Experience, bad customer service and discrimination. I had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant, and I will never return. We arrived ready to enjoy a leisurely meal, but the waiter’s appalling attitude ruined our evening. While he fawned over the white patrons at other tables, he deliberately ignored us. Despite our attempts to get his attention, he never returned to our table. Even when it came time to pay, he made us wait and then snatched my credit card, disdainfully asking if I intended to pay in pesos. It’s unbelievable that such places still discriminate based on skin color and language proficiency. We had an awful time there, and they really need to improve their customer service because everyone’s...
