How does one even begin to describe the epitome of mediocrity?
Entrusting a high Google rating without delving into recent reviews, I found myself embarrassed as the designated planner of what was meant to be a delightful dinner with friends.
Drawn by Bagatelle’s bohemian charm and a name that carries a certain cachet, I eagerly booked a reservation. Unfortunately, Bagatelle Tulum was an unmitigated disaster.
The evening started with a small glimmer of hope: a cocktail order and some focaccia, which, ironically, turned out to be the highlight of the night.
The drinks, however, were watered down and utterly flavorless. Hoping for improvement, we ordered another round, only to be let down again. Worse, one guest’s drink had to be requested three separate times before it finally arrived—by then, any semblance of hospitality had evaporated.
Hovering awkwardly over our table, the waitstaff added an air of discomfort, particularly given the company of our beautifully dressed guests. The attention felt intrusive rather than attentive, a stark misstep in an establishment that aspires to sophistication.
The food was no better. The carpaccio was drowning in sauce, obliterating the taste of the meat entirely. While the cacio e pepe pizza was a bright spot—simple and flavorful—it couldn’t redeem what followed.
Abruptly, the ambiance disintegrated. The restaurant erupted into an over-the-top spectacle: blaring music, flashing lights, and clapping staff attempting a half-hearted dance routine. It felt like we had been transported to a tacky Vegas nightclub, the noise so deafening that conversation was impossible. This chaotic interruption was not only out of place but highlighted the venue’s identity crisis: it’s a restaurant, not a nightclub. The jarring shift seemed like a desperate attempt to distract from the half-empty dining room and subpar food.
The mains were similarly underwhelming. The octopus earned a passable 7 out of 10, but the steak barely scraped by with a 6—a mediocre cut with little to offer. The pasta, initially served cold and sent back to the kitchen, should have warranted escalation to management. Instead, it returned as a hot but uninspired noodle soup with a flavor reminiscent of boxed mac and cheese—a dismal conclusion to an already disheartening meal.
By the end of the evening, we were left dazed and profoundly disappointed. Bagatelle Tulum, for all its pretense, is a masterclass in mediocrity—a venue where lofty expectations are crushed by poor execution and misplaced priorities.
If you value quality, ambiance, and a touch of class, I implore you to venture elsewhere. Find a place where conversation can flow, your meal will delight, and your evening won’t feel like a gaudy spectacle you’d...
Read moreI hate that I even have to post this. I’ve done tables across the country in Mexico and America (from Houston). I’ve never experienced worst service from the staff in My life. We Bought two of the lounge tables (just benches) for the day today 15,000 pesos minimum per table and that’s not an issue: they from the start we’re trying to FORCE more expensive bottles on us (which is there job i understand) but no 5 times doesn’t suffice. They had a huge menu and we try to order Tito’s and a basic tequila aka 10,000 pesos per bottle. They tell us they don’t have it and finally after 10 minutes of them trying to force it upon us stop and get us vodka (Tito’s) which is what we wanted. They bring it nothing to show for when bringing it didn’t even know the brought it and out it in the ice. With dropping over $2,500 dollars usually a sparkler OR AT LEAST A SMILE, but NO NOTHING. Hostility from the start because we were “being cheap” by ordering what we wanted and not what they tried to sell us. We end up getting 3 bottles of Tito’s in the end 30,000 pesos and we would’ve gladly ordered more beers cocktails etc BUT THEY REFUSED TO SERVE US BEERS AND COCKTAILS because In there eyes again we were being cheap. I’ve never felt more disrespected and unwanted for spending 37,000 pesos with tip. We got there at 3 pm and left at 7 when the music ended. Around 5:45/6 when the liquor ran out we started going to the bar getting our own drinks because they from the start (servers) were rude and mad we didn’t do WHAT THEY WANTED. At that time they start to removed the towels from our bed, take away the ice bucket which we had gone and gotten beers and waters (since they weren’t serving us) and attempt to kick us off the table…. I luckily knew someone throwing the party and got him involved and had to go behind closed doors and allowed us to keep our spot for the last hour. Remember ITS NOT BUSY OR ANYTHING. The disrespect and entitlement this establishment is something I’ve never felt from partying is Miami/scottsdale/LA/Houston/Denver/Tulum (taboo last year amazing service and respect. You can’t allow places to get away with terrible service of their customer when we are spending a lot AND ITS NOT BUSY. I will never be back and will make sure to tell everyone i can about this experience and how unacceptable It is. No one should ever get treated like this (no table or not) and we dropped almost 40,000 pesos. DO NOT GO HERE. What’s crazy is once the servers left us alone Aka we closed out we had so much more fun, no stress and actually had fun. Mind blowing to...
Read moreTruly disappointing experience at Bagatelle Beach Club Tulum (doesn't count for the Restaurant). In December 2024, my partner and I had a reservation for two beach beds at 12pm. When we arrived at the entrance at the scheduled time, we were told that we would be placed on a waiting list because all the beach beds were already occupied-despite the fact that we had an official confirmation of our reservation via email from their system. When we expressed our surprise and confusion about how our reserved beach beds were not available, the hostess at the entrance, who was supposed to welcome guests, rudely dismissed us. She arrogantly claimed that the reservation only guaranteed us access to the beach club, not the actual beach beds we had specifically booked. This was incredibly frustrating as we had planned to spend the entire afternoon at this club. To make matters worse, the hostess offered us a small table with a parkbench for the outrageous price of $1,000 (US not Pesos) in a almost empty BC. The offer was absolutely absurd and felt like an insult. Out of curiosity, we decided to take a look inside the club to see if it was worth staying for lunch at their restaurant. What we found was a venue that was not only poorly maintained but also outdated. The plastic animal sculptures scattered around were faded and peeling from the sun, clearly neglected for a long time. We decided to leave and instead went to Nomade Beach Club, which turned out to be an excellent decision. However, what truly shocked me was the unprofessional behavior of the staff at Bagatelle. Coming from Europe, I frequently visit high-end restaurants and beach clubs, where professionalism and customer service are held to the highest standards. This was far from what I experienced at Bagatelle. The arrogance, lack of organization, and poor maintenance of the venue were simply appalling. I am utterly disappointed and far from the luxurious experience it...
