My experience at Bak was definitely one for the books. I initially went to Bak with my family to celebrate my birthday and to experience “the best steakhouse in Tulum”. During my first visit, the ambiance was amazing and the waiter was very attentive but the experience drastically shifted when the waiter poured a bit too much liquid nitrogen on the table which resulted in the liquid falling onto me and leaving me with a bad burn. This resulted in me wanting to leave the establishment but the working staff insisted that I stayed and continue to enjoy the experience. Although I was in pain, I decided to stay. Following this situation, when it was time to pay, the money from a card of ours that we used, was charged on our end but not their end. This resulted in us looking more in depth at the prices we were charged because it seemed to be over what we expected. We then found that we were over charged about $180 over the correct amount, which was a problem. The staff then requested that we charge our card once again even though it showed that the payment went through and was more than our actual bill. This made us feel as if they thought we were trying to get over on them when in all actuality we truly felt like they were trying to get over on us because we were foreigners or “gringos”. This confusion resulted in Bak providing us with a new corrected bill that was slightly disconnected.
The following day, I woke up to see the burn had drastically grew, some very expensive glasses of mine had been misplaced in the establishment, and we needed an additional receipt from Bak showcasing the error was on their end. Once we came back to confront the establishment, they invited us to have an additional dinner where they would provide us with the experience that we were looking for. The following dinner was much better and we could see that the staff was catering to us on a level that we previously did not get. Although, this made us question how genuine the acts of kindness was, we truly had a amazing experience the second time and felt like we were guests they appreciated and wanted to come. Overall we believe the ambiance and our experience at Bak following our first encounter was very good, but the steak could be slightly better. Overall 7.5/10 please going forward ensure that all liquid nitrogen is prepared accordingly so no one...
Read moreHoly WOW!!!! It was not at all what we expected. An amazing experience! We had an awesome waiter and his assistant and the assistant chef came out to cook my steak!!!! The staff asks you to check your steak before they leave your table. Check it!! Mine was perfect but I read one or two reviews that said theirs weren't cooked right. Tell your waiter if your steak is not to your preference! It should not ruin your experience. The staff is attentive and sincere and will fix whatever you need. We came in for dinner a little early (because we're old🤣🤣) with no reservation and swear, we got the best seat in the house. We ordered 6 Japanese and 6 Mexican oysters and a bottle of white wine. They brought out wonderful bread and yogurt with local honey!!! Wow! I had to hold back from eating it all🤣🤣!! Then, the steaks came out! Jafeth/my new best friend/our waiter, came by at the perfect frequency. Our glasses were never empty and we were not in need of anything. We asked for a few more of the delicious grilled mushrooms and Jafeth brought them in minutes. This story doesn't end here. . . After our dinner Jafeth brought out a HUGE blue cotton candy to what we thought would put an end our experience. I don't care for cotton candy but this was fun and we wrapped ourselves the moment and experience. When Jafeth returned we ordered a beer and a sangria just to take the place in a little more. He suggested we stay another 30 minutes to watch "The Fire Show". WHAT?!?!? THE FIRE SHOW?!?!?! Then, Freddie came by to do a shot of tequila with us. The best, most pleasant tequila I have ever had in my life. The fire show was really cool. If I could give 6 stars I would. My experience here was so good, I'm considering going back and reducing all my other reviews by one star!!!!(Not really. I consider a cost to experience=value in my ratings too) If I could ever, I would bring every member of my family and all my friends to this restaurant. Yes, it is expensive but worth every penny. You can't take...
Read morePros: Food was good, the waiters were very skillful and spoke fluent english, the restaurant was nicelty decorated and the selection was full of different types of dishes.
Cons: The music was so loud you could not hear your own thoughts. For us restaurants are places where you can have a discussion with your company and enjoy the food. This place felt more like a nightclub than a restaurant. I had troubles hearing what the waiter asked and almost had to shout in order to talk to other people in my table. I politely asked a waiter if they could possibly decrease the volume even just a tiny bit, but they told me it's not possible because "the concept of the restaurant is to play loud music". The Dj played really good music. The only problem about it was the excessive volume. As said before the waiters were skillfull and kind of polite, but they did not smile very often. That is not a major problem, but the communication felt slightly "cold" at times. Smiling is always heartwarming. They suggest giving tips, but the way they do it is kind of strange in my opinion. You can let customers know that tipping would be appreciated, but you don't really need to literally ask for it like they did. It was also quite surprising to notice that the waiter seemingly got offended by the fact we did not want to give tip after not that good dining experience. At their website it says that tipping is not mandatory. Therefore it is not appropriate for a waiter to express any negative feelings for not receiving tip from a customer. The restaurant charged 110 mxn for about 1 litre of regular water. They can totally pay good enough salaries for the waiters.
The place is okay if loud music does not bother you and you like to shout rather than talk. As said food is fine and waiters know what...
