Yin Yang Restaurant — Restaurant in Kathmandu Metropolitan City

If you’re looking for authentic tasting Thai food, unfortunately this isn’t the place.

I had a craving for Thai food, so I went here after seeing the good reviews online. I ordered the pad kaprow and specifically told the waiter that I had lived in Thailand previously, I was good with spicy food, and I wanted it cooked the way it’s cooked in Thailand. I knew I had to mention these things, otherwise a restaurant in South Asia would see my skin color and think I hated spicy food.

Unfortunately, either the kitchen didn’t get the memo or they had no idea that pad kaprow is supposed to be AT LEAST somewhat spicy. When I tell you this was hands down the least spicy pad kaprow I’ve had in any country, I’m not kidding. No taste of chilies at all. There was hardly any basil, and what basil there was seemed old, dry, and wilted. It seemed pretty light on the fish sauce as well. All I tasted was soy sauce, garlic, and black pepper for some reason. Not very good, and certainly nothing like the dish that it was named after.

I know it’s impossible to get true authentic cuisine outside of that cuisine’s home country, but this wasn’t even close. So unless this was an anomaly, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant if you like authentic Thai food.

That said, I could see this restaurant being a good place for tourists who don’t like spicy, aren’t sticklers for authenticity, and just want something different from Nepali food, Indian food, or generic western food. The atmosphere here was quite nice and the prices were fair.

Although this is known primarily as a Thai eatery I was recommended this place for a steak. Lovely surroundings, very smart and staff are rather nice too.

I had a green salad followed by the café de Paris steak. The steak was a little chewy but I expect this in Nepal however it was full of flavour. Braised vegetables just barely cooked were tasty too. The steak is served with a herb butter which is so delicious. My only gripe was that I could eat a bigger portion of French fries.

The food is attractively presented the service staff are very accommodating and overall I really enjoyed the meal.
