We were ignored upon arrival, so just kindof floated at the entrance - when I finally got to speak to a staff member they said “Table or takeaway?” to which I mentioned that we wanted one of the tables free outside.
At that time, the owner was walking past and told me that there was a queue so we couldn’t sit there - OK, I thought, we’ll have takeaway then (given that it was an option provided), to which the owner replied “We don’t do takeaway, why would we do takeaway?”, laughed and walked away into the kitchen. The waitress behind the bar gave a withering look and shrugged at me.
For what it’s worth, we stayed outside for 4-5 minutes after this experience, wondering where else to go, the “queue” was an old man on a bench near the cafe entrance who made no effort to move to any of the free tables that we were apparently unable to sit at.
Looking at other less-glowing reviews here, it seems as though the owner has clear issues with non-locals and is always snappy is his replies so I await with baited breath about what he’ll clap back with to this review.
As someone who can’t eat gluten, I applaud more efforts at opening gluten-free establishments, I just hope future ones I visit won’t have owners with such...
Read moreThere are basically two kinds of approaches to what this modest and very friendly restaurant does. You can be a vegan lover and then we can move to the next case which is you’re not one of the tribe. I’m not a vegan. Just a foodie who likes - among other styles - the healthy hedonist style of this lovely little place.
Everything is good here. The home made soft drinks are a delight. I rarely drink any of these but here I tasted the wo of their sparking water based concoctions and regretted not being able to sample them all. All the food I had was perfect in its simplicity but I want to give a social mention to the blinis. Small hot pancakes usually associated with caviar. Hold the caviar, these blinis were transformed into a very tasty Mediterranean started that would also dit in we’ll in a more sophisticated context. In the summer the terrace on the canal is a lovely spot. People swim there, a delightfully cool setting. This is Amsterdam at its best. Friendly service too. I’m a local and happy they are in the neighborhood. Good beers too and the only wine I tasted was an elegantly sweet muscat at €5 per...
Read moreFully vegan, gluten-free, and organic eatery. Tasty and nutritious quality dishes, with whole-food ingredients. The Roasted King Oyster Mushrooms was great and came with a cabbage roll filled with lentils and cashew nuts, atop a bed of fennel and parsnip mash. The Vegetable Pie was filled with mushrooms in a creamy tarragon sauce, alongside a pool of stir-fried long beans and cabbage in umami tamari gravy. There were also 3-course meals available. On the pricier side but would definitely recommend this eatery especially for the health-conscious and those with specific dietary needs! Located near the National...
