Bottom line - this is a must try place, with excellent coffee as a bonus surprise!
This lively and cozy bar / restaurant was full when we entered without a reservation, but we were quickly seated at the bar. Ordering prawn crackers and sambal with our beers was a good move - the sambal appeared to be home made and had a beautiful tang and a distinct flavour of dried shrimp - about as authentic as I've tasted outside of SE Asia.
For dinner we had the Indonesian plate as it sampled a number of the main dishes offered on the small but well considered menu. I was not disappointed - the rendang was spicy, tender and with a great coconut bite, the pickle was fresh and crunchy, the satay vegetables were fresh and tasty and not drowned in satay.
After dinner we ordered coffee, which surprisingly was the best coffee I've had in Amsterdam. Actually, this was miles ahead of any coffee I've had in months - a wonderful surprise end to a fantastic meal.
Service was fast and friendly and the price tag was very reasonable - starter, dinner, beers and coffee for 2 people totalled about €50, which I'd say is excellent value.
One final note, this is a small space - we counted a total of 9 tables for 2 and a small bar, so you may need to wait if they are busy. During nice weather there is some outdoor...
Read moreI have eaten at this place before- and the food was great! They do not offer guests the option to make a reservation- so one goes there on the off chance of getting a table and the food is worth it! Tonight on a sunny August evening however, we waited first of all for a table- and got one outside after about 10 minutes- absolutely fine!! But after another 20 minutes of waiting we were finally told that the (very small!!) kitchen was too overwhelmed and thus had put a stop on orders for a while!! Fine…. But this literally took 45 minutes or more…. By the time we were finally told we could place an order we had not received any apology for the long wait- we had not been offered free nuts or anything like that (but we were told we could order some crisps and nuts which we did as we were starving…! ) so- by that point we were too upset and perhaps a bit ‘h-angry’ to order anything…! Perhaps this very good restaurant should consider offering less tables - as they obviously do not have the capacity to serve all those extra tables outside- and please do think about allowing people to make a...
Read moreI thought the restaurant was pretty soso. They have a cute interior and a nice outdoor terrace but their food is overpriced and definitely below average.
I had the beef meatballs to start. I have visited Indonesia many times and just found the taste extremely sweet and just confused.
I also ordered the lamb satay platter and was extremely disappointed. This is definitely not traditional lamb satay. It was bland, over cooked and the quality of the meat didn’t seem very good. It was tough but mushy at the same time. The only saving grace was the gado gado which was nothing to write home about but at least tasted decent and the rice which was quite fragrant. For a plate that cost 19 euros it wa not worth it at all!
Had to leave more than half of my satay behind because it tasted so bad. Indonesian food is one of my favorite cuisines in the world and Cafe Kadijk definitely does it wrong!
Avoid this place! I’ve been in Amsterdam for almost a month and this was by far the worst...
