Carstens Cafe — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Not sure why most images are of a different cafe, but given the name is Carsten Cafe I assume this is the right place for a review.

In short, the atmosphere is nice, the decoration is really good, music is chill and not loud at all, and the staff is very nice! However I was met with disappointment as they didn't have any food to offer at the time (18) since the kitchen was closed. For all I know this may be more of a case for the city rather than just this cafe specifically, so I'm not taking away many points for that, but I was a bit disappointed.

Decoration: Clean, lots of light browns and beiges with green. Pleasant ambience to be in. Music: Calm music and at the perfect volume to not bother conversations but still fill the silence. Service: Polite and kind. Both waiters I spoke to speak English. Bathroom: Noted that there's 1 bathroom for gentlemen and 2 for women, which is interesting to see, and considering past experiences going to the women's bathroom it's good to have more since one tends to be occupied. We visited this restaurant recently. Our own food and service were fine, but something happened at the table behind us that really bothered me.

A female waitress had offered extra strawberries to that table, but didn’t bring enough. When they asked another waiter about it, he was incredibly rude. He told them they could go buy strawberries themselves from a nearby supermarket and even asked if they needed directions. It felt humiliating and totally unnecessary, he could have just explained that they’d run out.

Worse, he started loudly telling other staff around the restaurant about the “strawberry incident,” making it a big joke. After witnessing this, I was honestly too nervous to order anything else because I didn’t want to end up treated like that.

It’s a shame, because the food was decent. But I’m hesitant to come back if this is how some of the staff...

Carstens Café is a nice place to eat at. The food was tasty, and portion sizes were good. The restaurant also is in a nice location, and the outdoor seating was a plus.

The only issue I had was regarding my food allergies. I told the staff about my allergies while ordering, and while they noted them, the meal I received still contained my allergens. As soon as I got the food, I immediately told them, and they asked the kitchen for a list of ingredients used. When I confirmed I was allergic to the meal they fixed the issue quickly. When I got a new meal, I enjoyed it. If you eat here, make sure to double-check your meal if you have dietary restrictions.
