My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Forget everything you thought you knew about falafel, because Maoz Falafel in Amsterdam is an absolute revelation. While the Netherlands boasts a vibrant culinary scene—from Indonesian to Argentinian to Turkish——the real unsung hero is the humble falafel found at Maoz. This isn't just a meal; it's an experience in a pita.
Maoz, a name that fittingly translates to "courage," (I think). is the brainchild of Nahman and Sima, who had the guts to reinvent the falafel stand. You get your perfectly toasted pita, stuffed with fresh lettuce and a few of their delicious falafels, and then the magic begins. You take control. This isn't a food line; it's your culinary playground.
The All-You-Can-Stuff-It Falafel Experience The falafel itself is a work of art. It’s crispy on the outside, fluffy and green on the inside, with a beautiful blend of cilantro, garlic, and cumin that sings with every bite. I’d confidently rate it a 9/10, and as a food lover, that’s high praise. But the real joy is customizing your creation. The endless salad bar is where you make your masterpiece. I’m talking about piling your pita high with their tangy onion salsa—my personal favourite—followed by a crunchy vegetable salad, a zesty carrot salad, and a dollop of creamy coleslaw. You have to finish it off with a drizzle of their vibrant chili coriander sauce. The harmonious blend of flavours and textures is truly unforgettable. While I’ve always been a fan of their classic falafel pita, the eggplant version is a must-try. The smoky, tender eggplant perfectly complements the crispy falafel. I've been eating here since my parents discovered it in the '90s, and it’s a tradition that has stood the test of time. When someone says Maoz has the best falafel in town, they aren't kidding—they're just telling you the...
Read moreFor the price of an ordinary falafel sandwich you could get anywhere else, MaozVegan gives you one that crosses the line into truly gourmet eating. Things work a little differently here: They put your falafel balls into your choice of white or whole wheat pita, and then you fill up the remainder of the pita with about fifteen outstanding accompaniments. There's no hummus here—the options go well off the beaten track but pair perfectly with falafels. They've got coleslaw, kimchi, couscous, olives, and spiced steamed carrot slices. And the must-try is the pickled eggplant colored with beet juice that they import from Israel. Altogether it's highly likely that your meal will put your favorite local falafel joint to shame.
Maoz is an all-vegetarian falafel and fries chain with locations in the USA and four European countries. This particular franchise is owned by woman from Northern India, and she was able to persuade the company to let her make her store entirely vegan. So on top of the falafel, you can also get a cone of excellent fries paired with one of a half dozen delicious vegan dipping sauces. Whether or not you're vegan, this is a must-visit place for anyone vacationing...
Read moreMy Wife is a vegetarian and unfortunately there aren't too many options for us to eat out. Maoz Vegan is a serious saviour for us on outings when we do not want to eat Fries or anything sweet.
The setup is amazingly simplistic and works extremely well, you order a bowl or a bread (white or brown) and then proceed onto fill it with a choice of salad options between 4 types of "Chutney's", pickles, onions, beetroot, olives, couscous, cole slaw etc.
The best part about this particular establishment is that unlike the one in Centraal this is relatively less busy so you can take your time and pick your bowl fills at peace, also as a policy you can fill your bowl once, so when filling it you can do it in an order you like (unlike central where you are in a very busy queue which kind of is a let down from an experience standpoint).
Amazing place and given an option i would eat here everyday, keep up the good...
