San Thomas - WS — Restaurant in Amsterdam

We visited San Thomas - WS on a cold January evening to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. The restaurant is beautiful, the food is delicious, but the service is terrible. It feels like the waitstaff only care about getting more tips from you. We felt uncomfortable here. When we paid the bill and asked about the metro's closing time, they just turned away and didn't answer, hinting that we should leave quickly because they were closing. We felt unwanted immediately after paying. The waitstaff, for the most part, are not friendly; I would even say they are unfriendly. My husband and I felt very tense here. I tried to smile at the waitstaff, and one of them responded with something like he's too tired to smile back, implying that I should leave him alone. Compared to American service, this not-so-cheap restaurant is a far cry from it. The restaurant owner should pay attention to the service and conduct training with the staff on how to behave...

A few days ago we came here for dinner. The service was ok at the start , they forgot our beer but this was no trouble. Once our dinners arrived we were quickly disappointed at the lack of flavour. We ordered the steak with fries and the grilled chicken with a baked potato. The salad that comes standard had no dressing, just lettuce and carrot. The chicken was juicy but both this and the beef had no marinade, no herbs or spices of any kind, it was very bland, the baked potato was the same. We had to ask for salt on our fries which had none. I asked the waiter who was a very young man, if we could get some seasoning or sauce , anything to bring our meals to life. The sauce was 2,95 euro which I ordered inside but it never came. We went to the Italian ( it’s two restaurants with one shared chef, I don’t need to say anymore really) The good points- the food when it eventually arrived was ok and the junior staff were nice. The bad points - it took one hour and ten minutes for our first and only course to arrive and there were lots of people before us still waiting. The owner had zero customer skills - no offer of a discount to the people around us who were complaining and no explanation for the wait, he kept sending the poor junior staff to deal with the complaints from the long line of upset customers. A couple in front asked for their water to be given free in compensation and were refused! The manager said if he did it for them he would have to do it for every one !
