Iâm so sad to be writing this review because Iâve been coming to Smash Palace for years and years and always been a fierce supporter. Unfortunately tonight I have had the worst experience and I feel so uncomfortable with the way staff treated me and my wife. We arrived on a flight from Auckland and came straight to the bar to see my friends, my first time home in ages and Smashy P is always our first stop. We had one drink each and everything was fine - until my wife went back to the bar to order another one and was told âwe wonât serve you or your friendâ. They gave no reason at all. We were completely sober, hadnât visited any bars along the way - literally just got off the flight, checked into our hotel, and came by. So I went up to the bar and asked why they wonât serve us only to be told repeatedly âI donât have a reason, Iâve just been told not toâ. Other people at the bar were being served their drinks. Would love to know why you decided to discriminate against us âcause it feels pretty terrible to be shunned by a place I used to...
Read moreThis unconventional pop-up bar has prime real estate in Christchurch. Located at the corner of Bealey Ave and Victoria Street, Smash Palace touts itself as a biker bar and friendly happy hour spot. Often overlooked as construction site, when the gates are open, Smash Palace is always packed with bikers (cyclists, motorcycles and vespas alike) as well as the post-work happy hour crew. Another cool addition to the city during the rebuild, the bar is made out of two parked buses, one runs the bar and the other offers indoor seating when its cold or rainy. Of course there is plenty of outdoor seating, funky decorations and "The Beatles" era music to keep you entertained for hours. Opening at 3p everyday and closing at 11 on weekdays or 1 am on weekends, Smash Palace is a great place to socialize with friends and de-stress after a long day. Try their Ancini Balls (risotto balls) and I recommend the local beers on tap, though my husband loved their APA-style beers by the bottle. This is one eclectic and unique piece of Christchurch that you...
Read moreI was invited to attend "biker night" as an international visitor with a group of riders - for beers & burgers. The food and beer didn't disappoint at all, the big "buzz kill" came to our table in the form of a "glassie" who took exception to a small whistle for attention when his back was turned to me (I was holding a plate for him to collect and take back to the kitchen). I'll describe this person as a stockie male with curly locks tied back and poor posture. Threats were made against me for my helpful gesture and a proper verbal reprimand was delivered in front of the group. In my experience, I would consider other options if this hostility is the usual hospitality shown to visitors. I not seeking a reply from the owner of this establishment, just understand your brand is only as good as the product...
