Food is always good, drinks interesting and the vibe is excellent. (March 2020). I wrote the review above three years ago but I am afraid the last time I visited Snug Lounge (last week) I was very disappointed. I've always taken my out of town visitors there as it is always reliable so I took my family members there again. It was the first night of a new menu - the flavours at Snug Lounge have always been well-balanced and subtle - but this new menu seems to have lost all that. My favourite - the kumara and ginger balls now have a massive amount of ginger in them, the broccoli and spinach dishes were overloaded with miso and were so salty they were almost inedible. In addition many of the dishes seemed to have doubled in size - completely unnecessary as the whole point of tapas dishes is that they are small. The bright spot of the evening was the service which was excellent as always. However because of the food I would...

All the way from Australia and Palmy North. 5 x adults.

Sweet and sour evening:

They hadn't switched over their phone going to VM. Tried to find the place. Not best signage.

First wait attendant had great customer service moved us to another table cause birdshit on the cushions, second wait staff was stressed because not much staff on yet to my aussie standards there werent many diners so why the stress?

Paid the bill before we got our dishes. Also bought pizza but was gona eat it back at the hotel and they wouldnt let us eat our jap dishes inside when a bird freshly pooped on my menu. No cutlery for those not confident with chopsticks. We also waited 49mins for a dish. Never got it. A bit of hassle trying to prove we hadnt received it but got my refund in the end.

The 2x cocktails were pricy and came with very little garnish.

Lift your game Snug Lounge.

Sad the experience was had. Not a venue...

Sadly tonight I had the most disappointing meal at Snug New Plymouth. I was treating my family to a what I had heard was an excellent Japanese restuarant. Our order was lost and after waiting 40mins we asked where our food was to be told" the order was lost" The menu was no fresh fish or rice and a Pinot Gris wine. The staff and manger were disinterested and highly disorganized. Our concerns were dismissed being told we had booked for 8pm. What did that have to do with not getting food because of an 8pm booking which was accepted and confirmed. We observed customers arriving after us getting their food shortly after arrival. Never will my New Plymouth family with business event connections, or myself reccomend this restuarant in future. This review is by an independent reviewer not a local guide or friend. Sandra...

We reserved a table and thought we'd be sitting inside. But it so busy on a Friday night we ended up sitting on bar chairs in the very busy shared catering area. The music was blaring but we could still chat. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and service was good. We didn't wait long for our order. The crisply fried shrimps and crab were delicious. My favourite was the broccoli and kumara balls. We eventually got a table inside and we ordered dumplings. They were rather salty for our taste but the rest of our food was yum. We both loved the atmosphere of the place especially once we were inside.

When we had dinner there, I feel like they should've turned us away, instead of feeling accommodated, we felt stuffed in a corner. The food came out so disjointed. I ate my mains 15 mins before everyone. My partner got his side, 10 mins after mains instead of with, other dinner guest got side first and main came out 10 minutes later. The portions were tiny or impossible to eat. It felt like kitchen was not run well. On scale of Japanese restaurants honestly one of the worst I've tried and I didn't think it was possible to make bad Japanese food.

The bar staff were amazing and friendly. However we were constantly pressured to buy food. The waiter (a girl who could hardly smile at us) came and asked us to order food 6 times within the first hour of arriving. We were looking to relax and enjoy a drink not be badgered constantly about food. We did eventually order food which was very good, except they then tried to charge us twice for some of the dishes.
