Lovely sushi and food ... but the service was terrible. I've been before and took a visiting friend for lunch because we wanted something fast and tasty. They only have takeaway cups for Miso so I asked if they had a mug that I could use (having asked this before with no issue). I was given a lecture about how it takes so much time to go out the back and get a bowl and that they'd need to charge me extra (a large size). In the time that the woman who I can only assume was the maître d' or manager been telling me off, she could have gone and grabbed 2 or 3 bowls.
After all this, the portion size of the miso was no where near the large I'd been charged for; it was hardly even a medium takeaway cup worth.
I was so embarrassed and my friend was horrified.
It's such a shame because the food is great but the customer service was shocking (the young woman who'd started serving me was doing a great job until the other woman had stepped in).
We had to wonder, how hard is it to have a wee stash of dine-in mugs or bowls under the counter to avoid this kind of interaction? Particularly now days when many people are actively avoiding takeaway cups and excess packaging.
I really hope they review their processes and avoid embarrassing customers...
Read moreIt's so hard to get simple and elegant right but Yoshi Press Hall has excelled on all levels. I had my first visit to their new Press Hall premises today and was instantly wowed by the beautiful fit out (such a blessed contrast to anything else in Wellington), stunning service from the owners, and impeccable food. We were delighted to discover that in addition to their super high quality sushi, they also make a range of food to order...and that's where we decided to venture. The Takoyaki (octopus balls) and their rendition of albacore tuna Poke were simply sublime and taking Japanese cuisine in Wellington to another a level.
Gyoza seems to be the new black in Wellington at the moment so I was initially a bit sceptical about trying Yoshi's but am so glad I did - they were heads and shoulders above anyone else's I've tried yet. My other half had the chicken bento and proclaimed it a complete winner.
The food was presented in a way that made us both feel pretty special - and it would have been easy to think with an experience like that I'd be parting with $150 plus for lunch but at a shade over $50 for a big lunch for two, I'd call it exceptional value . I just cant wait to get back there and try the rest...
Read moreThe food is uncomplicated yet with that special Yoshi touch that customers of their two sushi shops love: exceptional care and attention to authentic flavour. We had their udon noodle bowls for lunch and they were delicious. The broth is light and fresh, the udon was cooked perfectly, and my chicken had Yoshi's wonderful wafer-thin tempura crust. My husband had the Vegie option and loved it. The bowl size may look small but was in fact just the right amount. We're going back tomorrow for more! They also do karaage chicken (free-range), tofu (karaage & agedashi), sashimi, bento bowls of teriyaki chicken/salmon/beef or veg tempura. Also poke bowls (salmon & tuna) with rice,...
