During a recent solo trip through Germany and Poland, I spent two days in Gdansk and dined at several restaurants. One of them was Chef Food & Friends (paid at 11PM on Aug 13, 2025) While the food was average—neither exceptional nor poor—the experience was overshadowed by how the service charge was handled.
The menu clearly states: “From 3 people we add 10% for the service.”: a photo of menu attached. As a solo diner, I expected this wouldn’t apply. I ordered two items totaling 81 zloty, yet a 9 zloty service charge (over 11%) was added to my bill.
When I asked the server why the charge was applied, she explained that the owner believes everyone should pay tips. I pointed out the menu’s policy and noted that if this is their current practice, the menu should reflect it. She responded that the menu was outdated and hadn’t been updated in over a year. I then asked whether any prices had changed since that last update, but she couldn’t confirm. It is hard to believe the menu have stayed the same, despite of the inflation.
To be clear, I had no issue tipping at other restaurants in Poland and Germany—especially when it was left to my discretion, as is common practice in Europe. Most places clearly note that tips are not included in the bill, and I often added around 15% when paying by card. Coming from North America, this felt natural and fair—especially since it’s still less than the 18–20% typically expected here in North America.
What bothered me was the inconsistency between the stated policy and the actual charge. As a customer, I felt misled and that my trust was compromised. If a restaurant chooses to apply a mandatory service fee, it should be clearly and accurately communicated. I also felt that my right, as a customer, was violated.
For travelers who value clarity and fair treatment, I would recommend considering other dining options in Gdansk. To be honest, all the other restaurants I tried in Gdansk made better food with BETTER...
Read moreThe food was tasty but a bit pricey. It's definitely not a fine dining restaurant, but apart from my baked potato being served a bit cold, we were pleased with the food. My wife had the halibut and I had the sirloin. We also shared a plate of pierogis. My meat was perfectly cooked and so was my wife's fish. With less pricey food I would probably give a better rating, the price just wasn't reflected in the cooking and the food. The service was good and our food was served within a reasonable time from ordering. The menu stated that a service fee would be added automatically to dinner parties with more than 3 people. We were 2 persons and they added this service fee anyway to our bill. I was going to tip them 10 percentage anyway so it was not a big deal for us, but be aware of that they add a mandatory service fee to the bill in advance, even if you're less than 3 persons, so you don't get suprised when you...
Read moreI had a vanilla ice cream. I asked for one scope having just ordered the dessert, however I could order one more scope only I had to order another dessert which is annoying but I accepted it. But what really annoyed me was when I specifically asked for some tap water so I can take my pill 💊 and they gave me bottled water in a glass and charged me an extra 10 PLN zl for this. When I questioned the bill as to why I was charged for the water was because apparently tap water is forbidden because it's dangerous to drink...well I have drank tap water in Poland and not died and it is drinkable. The waiter went on the defence and said it would get them in trouble with their boss! Yeah right! I wasn't born yesterday!! Furthermore, the waiter rudely said "if you wanted water to take your pill you should have bought a bottle of water from the shop across there! (pointing!). I will not going back...
