This Michelin Bib Gourmand is famous for its cod, specifically the loin of cod. And yet they have other fish and meat and even pizza in their menu, testament to the number of tourists they have as customers. The place is huge, with separate seating halls. Me of course I ordered the most popular Grilled Cod Loin with potatoes and cabbage plus a soup. And with a fish dish, you can’t go wrong with a Rose wine. First off the wine. The server was correct to recommend a small bottle rather than a house rose. It tastes crisp and refreshing. Soup de jour was spinach soup. It was okay, not something to scream about. But the cod. It was the thickest cut of North Atlantic cod I have ever had. I was told that the loin is sliced and salted and then refrigerated for 3 to 6 months, to let the salt slowly marinate the meat. So no prize for the correct guess - the cod is salty but very very tender. Be careful there are fish bones in there. The dish is served drenched in olive oil and the potatoes and cabbage there help to balance the salty cod. Especially the cabbage. These were sautéed with garlic with the emphasis here that the garlic was almost raw. There are also some grilled onion rings and zucchini in the mix. So it’s an explosion of flavours as you go through the dish. I must say the portion is quite big. People with small appetites should consider sharing a plate and then you’ll have space for dessert. Total damage was Euro 29.75 which is quite decent, all things considered. Reservations are advised.

Disapointing, good food but poor service and atmosphere. We wanted an outside seat but none was available so took an inside seat and was told we would be notified if a seat became free. Of course we weren't even though seats became available. In the meantime we ordered and our waiter told me i would be happier with a half bottle rather than a glass of house wine. Of course it's rather embarrassing to refuse (especially as a couple) so i went with this more expensive option. Our first course was cod pancakes, a cheap item but part of a more expensive meal, they arrived lukewarm. The mains were fine. There was a tv booming fashion tv to a room empty apart from us and another Portuguese couple. I asked the waiter to turn it off, he expressed surprise but turned it off. Our waiter then disappeared but another waiter helped out with requests for a second beer etc. At the end of the meal I asked for a bill and the second waiter found the original one. We paid by card, the waiter said i could put a tip on the card. I did not leave a tip, he explained again how to add a tip and i told him i understood but choose not to leave one. (nb, for those not familiar there is no need to leave tips in portugal resteraunts although of course you can do if you want to or if the food and service is special). The food was ok but i left the place with a bad taste in my mouth.

Definitely not worth the Michelin star or bib or whatever they are holding. This is pricey and not worth any ounce of it. I’m an out of town guest from a country that’s really pricey so I think I know what’s pricey when I experience it. Had the cod which tip was burnt. Tasted nice for the most part (except that which was burnt). Also had half bottle of house white wine which cost €9! Wow what a rip off as compared to €2.5 down the road. And it was ho hum at best in any case. Service was lackluster. Sent my bottle of water to another table, sent me white wine instead of red that I ordered - I stopped caring at that point. Had to wait in vain for wait staff to sit me and they didn’t seem too bothered at all even though there was eye contact… Don’t bother coming here. Walk 150m to a local ristorante at Rua do conde and you’ll be spoilt for service and quality at a reasonable price. Avoid at all costs.

We made a reservation online, easy to use. Service was amazing from the moment your foot hit the doormat. The menu was varied, beautifully presented. Your were assigned a waiter, well trained, very well presented and nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere felt welcoming, open but yet private. Excellent place for small meetings. Small waiting area provided also. I am slightly disabled and smoke they offered me a chair outside to smoke, although they do have an inside 1 table sort of atrium/mini courtyard (see photos) that was open to the sky. (which they offered me once the diners had left) The whole experience, service and delicious food was excellent, and our new clients were impressed also. A must go restaurant. Solar do Bacalhau is a beautiful traditional Portuguese restaurant located in the heart of Coimbra’s old town. They specialise in Portuguese dishes, fish dishes and they also make very nice house pizzas. The interior is spacious, there’s a ground floor and a upper lever, very nicely decorated with real plants and flowers, not the fake stuff, they also a big wine shelf that you look at and select wines. I had the Solar signature pizza, which has olives, cheese, pepperoni, tuna fish, mushrooms, pepper, onions, ham and a egg. The pizza was very delicious, with so many flavours at the same time. I had the house red wine to pair with the pizza. For a dessert, I had the seasonal fruit which was a big slice of melon. I definitely recommend locals and tourists to visit the Solar so Bacalhau.

I happened upon this place while I was strolling through Coimbra after sunset, taking photos and looking for somewhere to dine. I think I was very lucky, because it was clearly a popular choice, and I saw several groups turned away after I was seated - so if you’re more than 1, I suggest calling ahead (or booking online) for a reservation. The staff were very friendly and seemed to speak pretty much every language between them! The food was delicious - I ordered the fresh cheese and olives to start, the Bacalhau com Alheira de Caça (I actually didn’t love the consistency of the sausage, but it was smoky and mixed nicely with the potatoes), and the drunken pears - I also started with a glass of Madeira wine, followed by a small bottle of vinho verde.
