O Algar — Restaurant in Lagoa

This is by far our favourite Portuguese restaurant in the Algarve. We visit it multiple times every year during our two month stay here, and every time we enjoy fabulous food in a beautiful atmosphere with outstanding service. We have brought many friends and they have all loved it. It’s a family run business which I think makes it extra special. The whole staff go out of their way to make every guest feel valued, whether you’re visiting for the first time or the 100th time.

Now for the food! Seven of us went there last night to celebrate my birthday, and I tried the Portuguese steak for the first time and it’s a new favourite. For starters, my husband loves their vegetable soup, while I favour the prawn-stuffed avocado. The fish is fresh, and they fillet it right at the table for you: it’s almost an art and I usually take a video. We’ve never been disappointed in anything we’ve ordered: mixed kabob, pork tenderloin, sole, sea bream, and more. All of the sides are also delicious - tomato salad, pickled carrots, boiled potatoes (or chips), steamed vegetables and so on.

We were staying in Benagil for three nights and decided to eat out for one of them. We wanted a restaurant within walking distance and so looked at each of the potential places' menus outside before deciding on O Algar for its simple, authentic menu and good prices. Our party had a range of food, all very delicious and the service at the restaurant was very good. The prawns were delicious and there is fresh fish for those who want (we had the sole though I hear the seabass is incredible, too). I'd recommend it for people looking to eat in Benagil, especially if you can sit on the terrace outside (it was a bit cold for us to stay there for our meal but we had a lovely drink before...

We have eaten here often over the last two years and it is ALWAYS wonderful. The fish and seafood are delicious and are what they are well known for, but even the meat lovers in our group love their mixed meat kebabs and pork too. They still grill over charcoal here. The desserts are delicious!

The service is the best I’ve experienced perhaps anywhere. It’s family run, and they pay attention to every detail. Care goes into everything, and they make you feel very special. Many of their customers have been coming for well over a decade. That tells you something when there are so many places to go here!
