O Pescador Benagil — Restaurant in Lagoa

This restaurant came highly recommended but ended up being a huge disappointment. It is a quaint place with a great view of the ocean and features some nice fresh catches of the day. Reservations are required and we had a fairly large party of 12 guests. Unfortunately the view and reservations were the best part of our experience. Time for the actual review; The portions were crazy small compared to what you normally receive in the area. The catch of the day is supposed to be sprinkled with salt and grilled in olive oil. I ordered the dorado cooked normally, another guest ordered the sole with no olive oil and salt only. My dorado was extremely salty and cooked dry without the olive oil, the sole was dripping in olive oil and barely had any salt. Food fail #1 The fish is supposed to come with a salad and roasted potatoes. The servers must not communicate with the cook though because we weren't served our potatoes with the fish and salad. It took us asking the servers five times before we got our potatoes. Food fail #2 Additionally when we finally got the potatoes the fish was cold. Food fail #3 The total bill for our party of 12 was around 460 euros, almost 40 each for portions that were 1/3 of the size we received from a hole in the wall we ate at the day before for about 12 euros each.

Great fish, mixed feelings about the service! This very knowledgeable lady waitress explained us everything about the different fishes available. Nice job! The beers took 20 minutes to arrive, this goes against typical restaurant service. Can be improved... We ate inside, it was a bit hot. My friends asked for a selfie and one of the waiters plaid a prank on them by taking a selfie... Should have deleted after the prank because now the prank can turn against him... Yes, that’s the “curse” of the internet. I was not very happy because he could have brought us the beers before doing pranks. Otherwise I would be ok, I’m a sucker for a good prank. The food was good, mostly the fish. The desserts were also nice. The starters were ok, looked more promising on paper. The view is nice... If you’re outside. After coming to this area for the last 20 years but never dining at the o pescador b4 we decided as it was out if season we would give it a try. On 1st entering we were asked if we had booked a table we said no, we were then seated in a corner at a table for 2 on iron seats. We were presented with appetisers ie bread olives carrots & plain oil that looked as if seen better days. When given the menu we ordered mushrooms to start,on the main menu they had rib eye steak priced at 22 euro, then told they also had rib eye steak as special, so decided to order that. In past experience yes specials r usual more maybe extra 5 euros at most. Imagine our shock when the bill came and our main was priced at 40 euros each......After this experience will not b going back again. My advice to anyone dinning there confirm price 1st.
