Overall opinion first - not really worth the money. Now for details. I got a glass of red wine for my steak dinner and it was way too warm, now don’t tell me “room temperature”, red wine should not be this warm, especially in a place “specializing” in meats. I got the 300 gram ribeye, grilled MR. The steak came out and I could tell right away, from decades of dealing with meat professionally, that it was under the promised weight. The menu claims that they only use salt to preserve the meat flavor, but I guess the kitchen lost their salt dish today because the steak was 100% unseasoned whatsoever. The coleslaw was red cabbage in mayo water with raisins that were sitting in it for so long that they had become grapes again, this too didn’t have a grain of salt in it. The crispy potatoes would have been nice, if they had some salt on them, which in line with the rest of the food was completely devoid of any salt. Now back to the steak again - I had asked for MR, but half the steak was overcooked to a MW and tasted as if someone had set it on fire. Not a pleasant grilled flavor, but rather of burned fat and yuck. The menu also claimed that the meat was matured and I can guarantee, from having dry aged many cuts over the years, that it was not (aged meat has a different aroma, flavor and texture, all of which were not evident here). I got the garlic butter as a sauce (for an extra €2), but instead of garlic flavor, it tasted of tons of old dry rosemary (and there is literally a plant of fresh rosemary sitting outside the restaurant). After cutting into the meat, the server came and asked if it was cooked perfectly. I said “no”, and she smiled and walked away. Another server came over to clear my plate at the end and asked me if it was good, again I said “no” and she took my plate and walked away. I was on a tight schedule and hungry and just didn’t have it in me today to complain and waste time. 1 out of 1 would...
Read moreFirst time at Don Toro - and the last. Music in restaurants not my thing, I prefer a lively hub of conversation, such as you mainly get in France. You can't go wrong with conversation, but music? If jazz is playing and the client hates jazz, they will not return. I will say that although there was music, it was not too instrusive and we were able to have a conversation. The starters were excellent. Then my husband ordered a rib-eye steak which was tough. But the fries were delicious. I ordered the braised tuna, with boiled potatoes and vegetables, which was huge. When my meal came, the plate was literally swimming in olive oil - as were the vegetables. And the boiled potatoes - what can go wrong with them? They were boiled in their skins. Nothing wrong with that, but it should have been mentioned in the description. Then they were smothered in a barbecue sauce which had chilli in it. The barbecue sauce should have been mentioned on the menu - and the chilli most definately. I am allergic to it. My final comment. I could eat nothing, it was all horrible and badly described. But I took it home where it proved to be a very expensive meal for the dog. I should also mention that one of the waiters was really most apologetic. Another waiter was most dismissive and told me that boiled potatoes were always served like that in Portgal. I don't think so - he obviously thought I was a tourist - but I have lived here...
Read moreHello - we went to this restaurant yesterday for dinner. The servers and the service is excellent. I ordered the 10oz Ribeye (29 Euros) and my son ordered the 10oz Filet/tenderloin.
The steaks were cooked to the right heat - medium rare. However, these steaks were poor quality. If you are from Canada or the US and you have had Prime or Select/AAA, these steaks were a AA (US Select) at best. My ribeye had very little marbling, and was rather chewy. Now a Tenderloin/Filet simply melts in your mouth, however my son's filet was again chewy. Both steaks had no flavor and we ordered no sauces as I believe if you have a good aged steak, it should have flavor with no sauces.
We did let the manager know and he was very polite and a bit surprised that we find his steaks mediocre. But if you have had a good Ribeye in Prime or AAA/Choice, then these steaks, which are advertised as being very good/wet aged and cut when ordered etc, then these steaks at Don Toro will be sub-standard and rather pricey. Service and ambience...
