O Carteiro — Restaurant in Lisbon

Very cute restaurant with a Bait and Switch touch! Upon seating we were delivered a plate of cheese we didn’t order. Most of the menu items were not available and instead of crossing them off the specials list, they marked them with a star, which to me means they are extra special not unavailable. I ordered the pork with Piri Piri which had no spice to it. My partner ordered the “Filet Mignon” which was really a Ribeye. Both were served with both fries and rice, whereas the steak needs fries and the pork needs rice, needless to say the food taste was good. The waiter paced back and forth as we were eating as if to say “Okay hurry we want to leave.” It’s too bad because the room is very pretty and romantic. I don’t understand the good reviews unless people like getting items they didn’t order, not being told what was 86’ed and being rushed. I left an 8% tip simply because we both have worked at restaurants and felt guilty not leaving one, but it was not deserved. Service...

Was a little hesitant at first, given it was recommended by staff from my hotel across street, but I have been here twice now for dinner and it has been outstanding both times. I had the fried filet mignon with fried egg on top for dinner, with the shrimp in garlic sauce to start. Shrimp were sweet as could be and bigger than expected. Portions large. I couldn't finish. Filet cooked beautifully and light garlic sauce it came in was delicious. I came back 3 nights later for dinner and had the Monkfish. It was a dinner I will never forget. Absolutely delectable fish, cooked perfectly. Cannot recommend enough! Authentic Portuguese cuisine and nice waitstaff. Understand going in that you will pay extra for things like water and butter. Such is the way in some countries....

An absolute gem in the heart of Lisbon, we found it by accident, whilst walking around our hotel, looking for a good, authentic place to get REAL portuguese food, which is exactly what we got at this amazing place. Totally clean, beautiful surroundings, friendly servers, they take pride in serving us, very attemptive, and the house wine, which we always go for when in places like Spain, Portugal, Italy or France was simply amazing, and of great value, delicious to the last drop!
