A Singular Charm of Lisbon: A Review of Pensão do Amor
In the vibrant heart of Lisbon lies the illustrious Pensão do Amor, a venue that, much like a fine wine, has matured exquisitely over time. Its history, intertwined with the transformation of Pink Street, is a testimony to the ever-evolving nature of this bewitching city.
Nestled within Pink Street, an area once renowned for its bohemian allure and vibrant nightlife, Pensão do Amor is steeped in stories that would make a Victorian prude blush. A former brothel, this establishment has seen countless tales unfold behind its closed doors. Today, while the evening's clientele might be different, the essence of intrigue and allure still wafts through the air.
I had the pleasure of discovering Pensão do Amor back in 2018, during my inaugural week in Lisbon. Since then, much has changed. The extensive refurbishments of recent years have not only rejuvenated its interiors but have added a modern twist to its storied past, with rooms now available for those seeking a more extended encounter with the establishment's unique ambience.
On my latest visit, I was treated to two drinks, crafted with the precision and flair that would rival any mixologist from London's West End. These beverages, much like the venue itself, seamlessly blended tradition with modernity.
But the true charm of Pensão do Amor is not just in its drinks or its refurbished rooms. It lies in the manner in which it has embraced its past while casting an eye to the future. The juxtaposition of the risqué history with contemporary offerings makes it a beacon of Lisbon's ability to evolve while honouring its roots.
In summation, Pensão do Amor is not merely a venue; it's an experience. A perfect blend of Lisbon's past and present, and a testament to the transformation of Pink Street from a once-seedy underbelly to a pulsating heart of culture and nightlife. Every sip, every glance around the room, is a nod to a time gone by, yet also a toast to the present. It is, in every sense, a love affair with the very soul of...

I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding my recent experience at Pensão Amor. My friends and I were denied entry without any valid reason, despite being appropriately dressed, comparable to other guests who were granted access. The bouncer literally said “I make the rules” and wouldn’t let us in. We stood in line for a considerable amount of time, witnessing others being allowed inside while we were the only ones with a brown complexion.
We arrived at the club with anticipation and excitement, looking forward to enjoying a night out. However, the treatment we received was disheartening and left us feeling excluded. It was evident that there was a discrepancy in how guests were selected for entry, and it seemed to be based solely on the color of our skin.
As individuals who value diversity, equality, and inclusivity, we strongly believe that every person should be treated fairly, regardless of their appearance. We expected the club to uphold these principles and provide an environment where all patrons are welcomed without discrimination.
The lack of transparency and clear justification for our denial of entry has left us perplexed and saddened. We were left questioning whether our race played a role in this unfair treatment. Such experiences undermine the progress we have made as a society in fostering understanding and acceptance.
It is my hope that the management of Pensão Amor takes this feedback seriously and addresses the concerns raised. We encourage the club to examine its admission policies and ensure that they are inclusive, unbiased, and free from any form of discrimination. IF NOT THEY...
Read moreUpdated review: When I first came here many years ago, it felt like a young place, and it was. Last time I visited, it was so diverse! We saw literally every age there, from teenagers to elderly people, all having a wonderful time. I will never forget the senior couple dancing to Backstreet Boys and having the time of their life! I hope every night spot can bring so much joy to such a variety of people. It is a place for everybody: locals, tourists, women, men, old, young, gay, straight, any race, any nationality.
This time the music was very much targeted to millennials, especially older millennials, and the dance floor was PACKED! The bartenders were excellent, attractive, and hilarious. Drinks were fast and strong for good prices. We ended up meeting some local women there and spent the rest of the evening bar-hopping with them! Extremely friendly crowd and an all-round fantastic time.
Original review from 6 years ago (3 stars): Definitely a place for young people. And I mean, like 18-20 year olds. Typical Pink Street type of place. It's fun and loud and colourful and they do make half-decent cocktails. The old history of the building (which I am not allowed to say because of Google's word filtering) is cool too, and it's certainly different to have a adult shop inside a club!
We had a good time but feel no need to return. Waiting in a big crowd as they make fancy drinks seems a bit silly and takes too much time. Again, this wasn't even a Saturday night---which it seems impossible to even get in unless you're there really early or don't mind queuing up for an hour to get in. You can watch drunk people go crazy on the pole in the back room if you...
