Friends and I were on Rua do Duque to find a place to listen to fado. One place that was recommended was booked solid so we decided to continue a little further on the street. There are a couple of restaurants inviting people in for food and fado. They felt less pushy than in other places we had walked by. We decided to try Solidó and were not disappointed. We were greated so kindly. While we waited to be seated (because during the performances, no service and no seeating is happing), we were given a small glass of ginginghna. Then our very stylish host led us upstairs to the dining hall. The 4 of us sat in a booth by a window. The space was packed, which made for a great ambiance. I noticed with sitting at this very long table running from the front to the back of the space. It was filled with mainly couples from different places who were complete strangers to the people next to them, but were getting to know each other quickly. I loved seeing that communal experience.
The singers and musicians were top notch. A man and a woman sang accompanied by a Portuguese guitarist and a classical guitarist (that's how fado is performed). The singers once did a duo. They also go us to particpate with clapping during more upbeat sounds. I felt their interpretation was sincere and came from the heart. It was beautiful.
The service was great too. Everyone on staff could speak English, which facilitated things for us. Our server, I wish I could remember her name, was patient with us, decribing the different wines and helped us choose the right bottle of rosé. Everyone was please with the food they received.
Upon leaving, we got to chat with the owners who are kind, good hearted, funny and passionnate people. I wish them and Solidó continued success. The place is a gem and really...
Read moreWe found Solido on our first night in Lisbon BUT we had already had dinner. I grabbed a card from the gentlemen outside who was trying to get people to come in.
Two days later I called for a 7:30 reservation at about 2 pm. We were seated one table a way from the Fado singers and players.
There were 2 guitarists and 2 singers that tag teamed throughout the sets. We really enjoyed the music. They play 4 songs per set and took a few minutes off between sets.
We arrived just before 7:30 and ordered appetizers of bread, olives, and a mixed board with cheese and meats. The Fado singers started a few minutes later. Between the next set we ordered our dinners which consisted of the picanha a casa, the cream cod, the roasted frango, and the fried chicken steaks. All the dinners were very good and the next set of music was great. I took a few pictures of the appetizers and desserts.
It is hard when a place tries to do two things well but I think Solido did that well tonight. We were all very happy with the food...
