I spent a lovely evening at Taberna dos Carris, a charming tavern tucked near Porto’s riverside. The moment I walked in, I was struck by the fresh, inviting décor—bright tiles, wooden accents, and a casual, friendly vibe that felt both modern and rooted in Portuguese tradition.
I started with a plate of grilled chouriço, sizzling and smoky, perfectly paired with fresh bread. Next came their signature cod croquettes—crispy on the outside and creamy inside—with a tangy dipping sauce that elevated the flavors. For the main dish, I tried the octopus rice: tender octopus infused into fluffy grains, with a lightly charred finish.
The wine list featured crisp Vinho Verde and a charming Douro red, both served by a server who clearly knew the labels and offered great pairing advice. The whole meal felt thoughtful without being fussy.
Evenings at Taberna dos Carris move at a comfortable, easy pace. The staff kept things relaxed and attentive, replenishing bread and checking on us without interrupting the conversation. It felt like dining at a friend’s house—warm, conversational, and heartfelt.
If you're exploring Porto and want small dishes that celebrate Portuguese flavors in a friendly, contemporary setting, Taberna dos Carris is a standout. I’ll happily return to explore more of...
Read moreI expected nothing and came out dissapointed. From my 10 year working in restaurants I have not seen something like that We ordered 2 portions of shrimps, chorizo, mussels, goat cheese salad, roze wine and a bottle of water. Shrimps - garlic was barely cooked and comepletely raw. Unpeeled shrimps with shit still inside of them. Mussels - somewhat good. They felt fresh, but the broth was nothing what we expected. We asked the waiter what comes into it and he failed to mention it comes with white wine, which, as a matter of fact, was undercooked as well (they didn't evaporate the alcohol) Goat cheese salad - lettuce was clean, dressing was nice. Just a brick of goat cheese burned from the outside and cold on the inside. It comes with shrimps which were also not cleaned properly and full of their fecies. Chorizo - a sausage from LIDL, barely cut, cooked in front of you in a plate. You have to turn that sausage yourself. It comes out not even barely cooked, cold on the inside and leaves you dissapointed. Drinks - completely fine, yet they don't know how to properly pour it. The atmosphere - we were seated next to the spot where they put the dishes. The hill of dishes never ended and it seemed that they just fired their dishwasher. They...
