Cimbru Restaurant — Restaurant in Cluj Metropolitan Area

April 2025 update: the location still is great and our favorite restaurant in town. I've never eaten a bad thing here, though our favourite are: The Beef Tagliata, Salsicia Sausages with Mashed Potatoes and the Grilled Octopus.

On weekends, they also have a brunch menu! The Eggs Benedict Angus sandwich is so gooood!

I've been meaning to go for quite some time, but I never got there as it's a little off the beaten path and not close to my usual routes. But that changes now, as I finally got here and I now know what amazing food I missed.

As we were a group of 4, we were able to try a variety of their dishes. We loved all of them, as they were well prepared and very delicious. The Fried Turkey Schnitzel was delicious, the octopus was cooked perfectly and the Beef Steak was a perfect medium-rare, as I asked.

Their desserts don't fall short either, the Homemade Chocolate was dense and tasted of cocoa, it was super nice. The Apple Tart came warm and it was great with the cold weather.

I don’t always post reviews, but when I do it’s for hidden gems like this 🙂. The restaurant is tucked away a short walk away from the city center. The place is not too big, a reservation is recommended for dinner time, but it’s very cozy, you feel welcomed, like at home. It has a very rustic decor, they use a pasta strainer and a grater for the lamp shades 😄. The staff is friendly and helpful. Now onto the star of the show: THE FOOD. We were offered a complimentary sample of their homemade liver pate, you could tell from the first bite that it was indeed homemade, you can’t buy such a smooth and delicious pate anywhere. For the appetizer we chose a salad with seasonal veggies and burrata, it was very fresh with a touch of creaminess from the generous lump of burrata. The main course was steak, their specialty. It was grilled perfectly, very well completed by delicious sides. I will not hesitate to return to this...

Food was amazing, problem here is the service. Very wrong attitude. Lady welcoming the guests had a very bad day. We arrived without reservation to try our luck. There were few empty tables without reservation. First we were told no tables available. Turns out some tables are available but without umbrella (it was raining before). We took one of these tables taking the risk, which btw had an umbrella, but it was just closed. We could place an order 15 minutes later after asking each and every waiter there, and got answers like: either I’m not the waiter or my colleague will take the order. All were dressed the same btw. Food came 45-50 minutes after we ordered. An “automatic” 10% tip is added to bill called “basics”. It would be nice to let me decide if I’m willing to reward such a service.
