5 minutes previously I'd been humiliated in public after being shouted at and made to (literally) argue with a truly awful waiter at the popular Bascarsija on Poshta Street and had been desperately trying to find somewhere else to eat on a gloomy Sunday evening when we discovered that Ranch was open. I was quite upset and cowed after my recent experience (and wondering if we'd committed some kind of social taboo by choosing to seat ourselves in the previous place), and so I asked the first waitress I saw if we could sit down, to which she very friendlily responded "of course, wherever's free".
Honestly, we stayed at the restaurant for an hour, watched our lovely waitress run about in the busy restaurant (honestly, she was a star) and yet her kind, positive attitude and approach towards her customers never left her, even when others in her shoes would've been flustered. She was also very sympathetic to our plight when we asked if we could change our baby in a quiet room (what a nightmare, Slovenia's not really a place for baby changing facilities, and babies do more than just no. 1s sometimes...) and helped us out, which we really appreciated.
With regards to the food and menu choices... amazing. I had the pleskavica (no idea how to spell it) with traditional cream cheese in a bread bun - after a 3 hour journey to Maribor and another 90 minutes after checking in spent running around, I was starving, but I still couldn't finish it - which was DELICIOUS. My husband had the 'burger' with cream cheese and a side of veg and bread, and he adored it, too. Prices were good.
Honestly, what a stark contrast to the last place. Just goes to show that you shouldn't always trust what's closer to No. 1 on the popularity list, and scrawl a little further down.
Oh yes, and they're right opposite the Drava, which makes for a...

It was strange that the waiter called Ajvar tomato sauce, but then his colleague corrected her that it was paprika/pepper. The service is fast, and we were not surprised when paying. In good weather, the terrace is...
Read moreWe had the Grill for 2, plus some bread and chips, it was almost too much food for two persons, the meats where lovely, the chicken or turkey was really nice and normally I don’t like how people cook that meat. We also sat by the river and the nice bridges surrounded by beautiful old buildings in the middle of the city. Plus we fed the little cute birds a...
