"Welcome to Maribor", indeed. We'd been in Slovenia (for the first time) for a mere 3 hours and were shouted at and embarrassed in front of an entire restaurant clientele by a waiter. I can honestly say that I have never been so humiliated or spoken to so poorly in public by anyone, let alone anyone in a so-called customer service role, until today. When my husband and I (and our baby) first arrived at the restaurant, we saw there was a free, unreserved table outside, and so went over to it, but before we sat down we asked the waiter if the table was "OK" (meaning could we sit there?). "No, because of the rain" he responded. We stood there and waited to be offered another table, but the waiter ran off. We noticed another couple was leaving, so we took their table. I wasn't sure what to do with our baby in her pushchair, so my husband parked her next to us, admittedly blocking the walk-through (though I was planning to immediately ask whoever served us if there was a better solution or more suitable table for us). Soon, the same waiter (and a younger one) returned, and immediately started loudly and semi-aggressively having a go at us for sitting down without asking him, and scolded us for blocking the area, then ordered us off the table and to a table inside, and continued to berate us for not checking with him. He then stalked back into the restaurant, and I (somewhat in shock and slowly getting angry) loudly retorted to his back that I had already asked him about a table when we first arrived, but he either ignored or didn't hear my protestations. By now incredulous and embarrassed, we followed him inside, where he showed us a table, but repeated the same "you should have asked me about a table", shouting and literally almost screaming the last few words. The other customers were staring at us by now. I snapped. "Right, that's enough, we're leaving." As we turned back, I faced the still-shouting waiter and repeated that I'd "literally asked (him) about a table when we first arrived, but (he) hadn't helped". He then started to apologise, though sincerely, sarcastically, or for damage control in front of the already-seated customers, I'll never know. We ignored him and walked out. The saddest thing, apart from the fact that we'd been keenly looking forward to eating at this particular restaurant, is that this 'gentleman' (who, btw, directed all of this conversation and behaviour towards me, rather than my 6'3" husband) was the first Slovene I'd ever spoken to. Talk about making a great, lasting impression. A good thing that we had excellent, helpful service (especially with our baby) at the second restaurant we went to, Grill Ranc on the river bank, which saved the first evening of...
Read moreHmmmm We have been loyal guests for nearly 10 years, and this place has always held a special meaning for us. However, during our last two visits, we couldn't help but notice that some things have changed — particularly in terms of service and food quality. The accommodation where we used to stay is no longer available for booking, which was quite disappointing, especially considering how popular and well-received it was. Service has also seen some shifts: during our last visit, two items we ordered after our main meal never arrived, and the only acknowledgment was a casual comment, "ohhh, they didn’t bring it." While we completely understand how busy and stressful service can be, we had hoped for a more attentive approach, as this was never an issue in the past. At payment, the interaction felt rushed, with little regard for whether a tip was left or not — something that, again, stood in contrast to previous experiences. It also seems that with the opening of the second restaurant, the focus on quality has slightly decreased, and the menu has been simplified, possibly to allow for faster preparation and higher volume. The food remains good, but it no longer leaves that strong impression it once did — it’s enjoyable, but not something we eagerly anticipate anymore. I will certainly return again, out of fond memories and appreciation for what this place once represented, but it will be more for a drink and a moment of nostalgia rather than for the full experience...
Read moreWhen staying in Maribor, I cannot imagine a better place to be at - in the very heart of the city centre, Baščaršija offers an incredibly comfortable stay - the apartment was surprisingly big, with a comfortable bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and a bedroom with really comfortable beds. The interiary design makes it for a comfortable stay with a really pleasant atmosphere. As it is situated right above the restaurant, I can imagine it can be a bit loud for those that are on the sensitive side - that did not bother me, but the church bells early in the morning did, as a church is just a minute-walk from the appartments. If you are sensitive to the noise, I recommend you take ear-plugs with you, just in case.||The appartment was clean, there were fresh towels for all of us and even a hair dryer in the bathroom. The staff is incredible. At the check-in the place was packed, and the receptionist was also one of the waiters and in a packed place I took him from the restaurants to deal with the check in and grand tour of the appartment. He did it withouth rushing, with a smile and warm welcome. The entire staff is simply amazing in Baščaršija. All in all there were no faults with the accommodation and needless to say you need to eat at least once downstairs, as their food is...
