One of the best dining experiences I have ever had in my life and in all of my world travels. I first dined at Spajza in 2012 while visiting Ljubljana for just one night. I’ve thought about that meal at least once a month for the last six years and had been anxious to go back if I ever ended up back on that side of the world. Well I finally got my chance when I returned to Ljubljana last week with my whole family in tow. All 10 of us including 3 small kids. Definitely get a reservation ahead of time as the whole restaurant was full of reserved tables and rooms. Every single thing we were served from the kitchen was to die for. The bread, the chicken pate spread, the horse carpaccio, the Slovenian cold cuts platter, the spinach gnocchi. Don’t even get me started on the young horse filet with fresh black truffles. OMG. and the desserts were outrageously good. Chocolate soufflé per our waiter’s rocmmendation was gone in less than 90 seconds it was so good. And the traditional Slovenian apple strudel was so good I nearly slapped someone. The service is impeccable, the wine list and recommendation from the waiter was absolutely perfect. We had a really great time at Spajza and I was 100% entitled to the “I told you so!” I got to tell me family. Eating here for the second time even after 6 years was an absolute pleasure and wonderful experience. DO NOT miss your chance to eat here when you’re in Ljubljana. It’s worth every single penny.

This was booked for me as a birthday surprise, on a larger surprise that was a city break to Ljubljana. Going in blind was super refreshing cuz it meant I could just enjoy it for what it was; no expectations. We started with the trio fish starter, served cold with fresh bread. All of it was bang on, and a good fresh way to start before the steak. Pick your meat, and the weight is listed per 100g. My only gripe would be the menu; which wasn't super clear on how to order without a bit of deciphering. We wanted Porterhouse, but didn't opt for the 1.1kg cut they had available; mostly because self-doubt crept in on my ability to finish it. Instead our waiter, with an epic beard tied epicly, recommended the Buffalo, a rib eye cut that we might not have otherwise ordered. It came perfectly cooked and seasoned. Paired nicely with a red also suggested by our epic waiter. Not cheap, but local, and really tasty. We added truffle mash & Veggies to the steak (600-700g of meat for 2) and the shared main was perfect. We topped the meal off the way we started, fruit schnapps. This time joined by our awesome waiter who dominated a grapa shot with us. Overall the meal was not cheap. But it was a great steak, great service and I came away feeling a sense of value. Which is not easy at high prices. Would recommend!

Nestled slightly hidden in the bustling city center, Špajza is a gem that beckons meat lovers. The restaurant boasts a beautifully maintained garden outside, providing a serene escape from the urban hustle. Inside, the decor reflects the building's age, featuring charming vintage elements that transport you back in time. What particularly surprised me was the unique wine cellar—a vine basement where they actually keep vines. The temperature is perfectly regulated, ensuring that white wines stay crisp in winter and red wines reach their ideal maturity in summer. Špajza is undeniably a steakhouse at heart, offering an extensive menu featuring a variety of cuts. I highly recommend bringing friends if you plan to indulge in one of their massive steaks, each weighing around 1kg. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional, eager to guide you through the menu and suggest excellent wine pairings. They have almost any wine you can wish for. Despite its focus on steak, the restaurant also offers a delightful variety of other dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Be sure to save room for dessert—the chocolate muffin with ice cream vanilla, showcased in the picture below, is a must-try. It’s the perfect sweet finish to a hearty meal, making your visit to Špajza truly unforgettable.

Absolutely atrocious service which ruined the evening experience and appeared just to be directed at myself and my partner. Arrived at the restaurant to find it completely quiet. We couldn’t see anyone so we wandered slightly into the restaurant only to be shouted at rudely by a blond ish woman to wait in the bar. At this point we thought should we leave given her rudeness but thought no, perhaps that was just an off moment if she was busy (to confirm, the restaurant was not busy at all at that point, not that that would have been a valid excuse in any event). So we went outside to wait and two waitresses arrived one of which with short dark hair was to show us to our table. At which we were directed to the door and told to sit “anywhere set up for two” seeming somewhat strange that they couldn’t manage to properly seat us in what was meant to be a nice restaurant. We were then provided menus and the same waitress returned to the table and simply stated “So?” Which we took to mean she was asking what we wanted to eat. We then had to ask for an alcoholic drink as the offer of one (or a drinks menu) was not forthcoming, or any explanation of the food menu. My partner asked a passing waiter where the bathroom was and he merely grunted at him and walked off and ignored him when returning back. My partner then went into the restaurant and was merely vaguely gestured to where the bathroom was by another waitress. All of this was whilst other tables seemed to be treated nicely, seated properly, had pleasantries and conversation with the staff rather than monosyllabic answers to questions, we were somewhat puzzled as to what we had done or why they felt they had valid reason to ruin a meal experience. By the end of mains (which we didn’t finish) we had had enough and asked for the bill for which we were told to go and pay at the bar. No one asked us why it appeared we were leaving mid meal.

Disappointed at having a meal we were paying for ruined I was very clear to the waitress on taking payment that the service was rude and unacceptable. Pity to feel so unwelcome given how lovely and welcoming Slovenia has been otherwise. I will also be sending an email to the restaurant also to ensure this review gets back to management as I would hate for anyone else to suffer...

Early night in lovely autumn evening, conversation starts to fill the air and bunch of slightly tipsy footsteps at cobblestone streets walks towards the restaurant. Oh yea it is restaurants worst nightmare: Group of 18 tipsy people arrives at 21.00 to feast, well gladly for them we noticed them before. Tables were connected to have us nice big L shaped table. It made seating bit hard for people in the middle at the wall side but still nice that they made the effort. Waiter was really polite and spoke decent English. I admired their skill to keep up all the drink and food orders for everyone and remember who wanted what. Too bad that it was already so late that they run out of horse meat so some of us needed to change their order. But that is understandable if you want to run restaurant with fresh ingredients and make some profit without wasting the food.

Things got starter with nice salami amuse bouche from the chef and drinks of course. House wine first tasted little bit too fruity but when you let it decant for a while, it got more structure and deeper taste. For starters we ordered big plates of different kind of meats, seafood and cheese and I have to say.. truly incredible ingredients and really well prepared! At main dish Duck was juicy but still crispy at the top so also really well cooked. All the things that they put on the plate was simple, but really well made and with fresh ingredients so just to way I like it. Nothing extra fancy or million little components. A la Carte prices were above average and even kinda high on some dishes but after you eat, you don’t mind. Definitely...

Communication via e-mail was exemplary. Delicious beer. We ordered a soup before the main course. Nevertheless, the main course was delivered first and very quickly. We refused and let the soup come first, as ordered. The mushroom soup is highly recommended. It was followed by the main course. Since it was apparently kept warm, the meat was no longer medium and therefore a bit tough. Can happen. But what is not acceptable is that we had to ask three times for the bill, a total of 10 minutes. We then left our place, another service apologized and we were finally able to pay. Then I had to run. The prices are lifted. The second dish was described as spice, but too spicy - for us.

Die Kommunikation per E-Mail war vorbildlich. Leckeres Bier.
