„Authentic Asian Kitchen?“ Not in this Universe!

Well where to start - it should be the best place for Asian food in Ljubliana but even my friend (Slovenian) was more than unhappily“surprised“. The whole package was an example of an Asian cooking horrorshow. I would like to blame it on the Covid break but really guys, is that all you got? Normally I never rate locations badly, luckily we seem to pick really good locations and for sure I am not one of this pathetic Narzissm guys. So this really is an exception for me. The food, or in other words the cooking quality, as it’s result was so ridicously bad in quality, that i decided - Yes everybody should know and avoid this place as it‘s prices are higher than the best Asian places I have been to for years. I have been to China, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and many Asian places around the world and I love this food. But this is a shame for anyone who is really passionate about Asian cooking and a slap in the face for all Asian cooks around the globe.

The Papaya/Mango Salad - watery, no dressing, no fish sauce or spice at all.. some broken helpless almonds instead of peanuts or cashews, simply no taste at all. The waiters answer: „I could ask the kitchen for a dressing- 5 minutes later he told us they could not make it and he knows it is quite watery“. Wow.. 2. The sweet and sour sauce, smoky yes but completely sugarfree, just acid plus smoke? aroma.- the waiters answer: „just nothing, he could ask for sweet and sour in the kitchen but this is how it comes“. And no it was not that deliscious and easily made fishsauce/vinegar/sugarsauce mix that is known in Vietnam as well. Not at all. 3. The PadThai - sticky and colorless like glue and pudding, surrounding by noodles, high acidity, taste like a 1$ chicken soup, no sort of any typical authentic taste of a well cooked Pad Thai - no Love no nothing. The Rice - well not my favorite side dish anyway, but simply cold from the time it arrived at the table. The waiters answer: „I will tell the kitchen“ and he left and returned for the bill at least. Completing this total shame of asian cooking skills was the service - speaking of reflection.

The only shine at this Restaurant was our wine selection by choice: The Wine - BURJA Estate - Belo. But still better get a bottle somewhere else and skip this Asian...

Their menu is not too comprehensive but dishes are amazing. We started with delicious mix of appetizers and some amazing mussels in rich coconut sauce. All appetizers were perfect in every aspect and very fresh. For main course we decided to try beefsteak, which was cooked medium rare to perfection and duck in mango and pear sauce. Flavors were very asian because of the salty and sweet which we are really fan of. For dessert we went with some nice chocolate souffle with the side of homemade mango ice cream. We came to Shambala tasting their food in the food market on Friday. The fried king prawns with mango sauce and the beef were amazing. We ordered prawns when we came to the restaurant but this time the Singaporean prawns, mango salad and duck breast. And coconut pana cotta for dessert. All the food were good except the Singaporean prawns. It was so salty that I was unable to eat the gravy. I tried to pad dry the prawns to get rid of the excessive salty gravy and eat it by rubbing them with the rice. When we asked the staff, they said it might be a different fish sauce (which they sourced) had more salt than usual and just said sorry. We expected that they could have asked for making the dish again. In hindsight I should've sent it back immediately. So this 3 star for food is for that. Though they offered a 10% discount at the end which was very nice of them. But it's not about money, it's indeed about expectation on the experience.
