Made a birthday dinner reservation which called for an intimate seating arrangement, on arrival we were seated in the center of the dining room, completely opposite to what was agreed. When asked, a common seating area outside the restaurant was offered as an alternative to which I declined as it was in the hotel lobby. Waiter barely introduced herself and asked about drinks. No menu introduction, no advising on night's specials. Zero. The food offering can only be described as unfortunate. Two pastas were ordered, one a chefs pasta and the other a prosciutto crodo tortellini. The tortellini dish lacked seasoning and the penne in the chefs pasta was overcooked. Could not get it onto a fork without it breaking into pieces. As an Italian restaurant, you expect that the phrase al dente would be thrown around. Waiter was not attentive to say the least. Took our orders but brought one of us an incorrect order. We ended up having to wait while one of the meals were corrected before both were brought back to the table. Upon making the reservation, I was advised there was desert to be had with a happy birthday note attached but this was not forthcoming. Not wanting to make a quite disappointing experience any longer, we requested the bill, paid a generous tip, and left. We won't be returning to Gusto. Better value and service could be had at Steers on a...
Read moreI recently needed to find a venue for my 40th birthday dinner and came across this absolute GEM of a restaurant. In fact, it`s not just a restaurant, its a destination!
From the first time I visited, for a testing menu, to leaving after closing the bill after my birthday dinner last weekend, the experience was phenomenal.
Some stand out points that need to be mentioned:
(1) The venue is contemporary, sleek, modern and inviting for relaxed and fine dining.
(2) The staff are incredibly attentive, professional and have a world-class level of service, that is second to none, even when pegged against similar establishments abroad.
(3) The food is the most authentic Italian cuisine, this side of Tuscany. The menu speaks for itself and I have still git guests messaging me, complimenting the excellent meal they enjoyed at Gusto.
(4) The team, particularly Gabrielle, Kevin, the AMAZING Chef, the ladies at the bar and the waitrons - were all incredible and went out of their way to accommodate us and delight my guests.
I can highly recommend Gusto Urban Italian to anyone who is looking to host an intimate event, or, simply to treat yourself and your family and friends to some of the best cuisine you will find in the Cape!
Well done to the team, thank you and...
Read moreThe food was great but unfortunately service and some basic things were not up to par. The place was very quiet, with only 3 tables in total, so I don’t understand why the service was average. I had a good view of the kitchen, the bar and the manager from my seat and the kitchen rang the bell 3 times to let staff know food was ready to be sent and not one person moved. I watched the manager not even flinch after the 3rd bell. I ordered a negroni, which is probably the easiest cocktail to make, and it took about 10 minutes to make, despite the restaurant being empty. They claim to be an authentic Italian restaurant but the negroni came with a straw. A STRAW. Any good Italian restaurant knows that a negroni isn’t had with a straw. Smaller things as well like the coffee was cold, the one waiter only cleared the one plate when we were done but then left the rest and went to do something else. We still tipped 10% but I...
