I’ve always loved Korean food as a Korean (not South Korean). I came here after shopping and ordered 콩비지찌개 (soybean pulp stew) for 9,000 KRW. The food was actually good.
What ruined it was the staff.
I gave 10,000 KRW and wasn’t planning to take the change—I was actually going to leave it as a small tip, even though tipping isn’t common in Korea. But the man in the pink hoodie (who looked like the boss, covered in tattoos) didn’t even try to give it back. Another staff said, “9000원인데” (“It’s 9,000 won though”) and before I could say anything, he just muttered, “외국인이야” (“she’s a foreigner”), assuming I wouldn’t understand.
I do understand Korean—fluently. I just don’t always speak it, especially when I don’t feel local.
It wasn’t about the 1,000 won. It was about the attitude. I came in with good intentions, and was met with disrespect and dishonesty.
If you’re a foreigner, be careful and check your change. Moments like this still happen.
