It could be nostalgia, otherwise I can't explain why I still bother with KFC since the chicken isn't as nice as before. Considering the number of tastier fried chicken competitions it has, I don't know why KFC hasn't given up and closed.
However I've learned that KFC in different countries taste differently. In my home country it's more like KFCrap, but in certain places it's actually quite good. Hence wherever I go, I'd sample the local KFC, to find the holy grail of KFC I supposed.
This particular outlet is conveniently near my hotel, and it's right outside exit 9 of the metro station. I can't speak or understand a word of Korean so thankfully the helpful young man behind the counter spoke some English.
I had high hopes for KFC in Korea because I figured it had to be good to compete with its excellent Korean fried chicken rivals. But no I was wrong.
The Zinger uses breast instead of thigh meat (yes there was a time when thigh meat was used during the crustacean ages). Breast meat would be fine if it was done properly. But my chicken patty was dry and had as much taste as A4 paper. It's a good thing I bought some original chicken too. But even the original chicken tasted almost the same as the one in my home country - just plain ordinary.
So KFC in Korea is on my avoid list now. Lucky for me and all fried chicken lovers, there's a lot of good choices out...
Read moreMost leading fast food outlets have opened up locations here in South Korea. Maybe the biggest and most well known fried chicken restaurant in the world KFC / Kentucky Fried Chicken is popular here in South Korea. There are over 165 outlets currently here in South Korea most of which at franchise owned. The first store opened over 30 years ago back in 1984. The menu is very similar to other nations but sometimes there are Korea exclusive items; such as 불치킨 (Fire Chicken) (2015 / video below) and previously the Meat Beast Burger (chicken buns and a patty inside). The prices are also reasonable; for example a single Tower Burger costs ₩4,800 ($4.50) or a 9 piece bucket cost ₩19,500 ($19). Also they do a ₩1000 ($1) Ice Coffee which is surprisingly good. Finally unlike Korea Chicken places they don’t include the neck, how many people like eating chicken neck anyway? We visited our local outlet recently and found that the service was fast and simple, ordering in English wasn’t an issue due to the clear and simple menu. They are run different offers which can be very good value. Finally the taste simply put is KFC, it’s the same as in the US, UK, or anywhere else. It’s a nice taste of home with a...
Read moreAs an American I wanted to try out Korean fast food joints of familiar names. First of all, I'd like to say I think I got more chicken here than I would've back home. I liked how fast the service was and how much more friendly the workers were here. The strangest thing to me was that biscuits in Korean KFC are what we consider scones. It was a nice surprise and I loved the different menu way more than what I have back home. For sure going to come back...
