Okay, so I have lived in this area from almost a decade. Here's what you need to know. Hongdae use to be artist alley for Seoul. All your korean students that had their personal artistic way could live it out in this area. For a traveler, a person could enjoy this experience of Korean artists making their professional life. The bars and restaurants use to be geared towards them and protecting the Korean artist way of life. This was almost a decade ago though.
As of these days, that entire experience has vanished with the hyper consumption of travelers and foreigners dwelling here. Itaewon use to take the heavy load of it, but now Hongdae has become the new Itaewon. Meaning, you'll see everything catered to foreigners and consumer marketing for them. The students only have 홍대university to celebrate their cultural art experience.
Sinchin, a stop over has felt the weight as well. I say all this because if you are traveling to Korea to experience a korean way of life, Hongdae, like Itaewon has very little. If you are looking for a clubbing, dating, good food experience, this is the place of course.
I come here for the food, the youthful bars and clubs and of course the fun busking at night. You want to get drunk and meet someone, this place will give you everything you desire. You want to dance the night away, no better place.
If you want a more Korean cultural experience, Sinchon a subways stop over, has it better. If you want a real Korean experience all together, head to a part of town with a university no one knows and you'll get it. As travelers begin to swarm new areas, the culture has to change, which isn't always the best for Korean stuff. Sorry, I'm a traveler too, but let's be real.
Hongdae is still home and a place I love. They will always have good snacks and fun stuff. The people here will always be fun. Word of advice though, 😎 if you want fun here, find the hidden bars and underground music labs. There's a lot of hidden gems they restrict foreigners from finding, but if you act with respect and kindness, they may let you in.
DO NOT DISRESPECT GIRLS OR THE KOREAN MEN here!!! It's a one way ticket to a fight...
Read moreHongdae is a vibrant neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea, situated close to Hongik University. Renowned for its urban arts scene and indie music culture, the area boasts an array of local shops, clubs, cafés, and entertainment options. Located in the Mapo District at the western edge of Seoul, it encompasses Seogyo-dong, Hapjeong-dong, and Seogang-dong. My wife and I make it a point to visit Korea annually, and Hongdae remains our favorite spot to unwind and enjoy our vacation. The bustling streets are always alive with the energy of street performers and artists, showcasing their talents to captivated audiences. Each visit brings new discoveries, whether it's a hidden boutique selling handmade crafts or a pop-up art exhibit that captures the imagination. Hongdae has a special place in our hearts, and every time we return, it's like catching up with an old friend who never fails to surprise...

Hongdae Street is a great stop if you’re looking for a casual and vibrant night out. The area is close to a university, so the vibe is young, energetic, and laid-back. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, and most spots offer good quality food and affordable drinks.
It does get pretty crowded, but not in an overwhelming way — you can still walk around comfortably and find a seat at most restaurants without much trouble. While the atmosphere is definitely fun and worth experiencing at least once, you’ll find similar vibes in other areas of Seoul, so it’s not exactly one-of-a-kind.
Still, it’s a solid choice for a night out, especially if you're into street food, people-watching, or bar hopping. Definitely recommended if you're nearby or want a taste of Seoul's youthful nightlife scene.
