TANI — Restaurant in Seoul

We had dinner at Tani last night on the recommendation of the concierge at our hotel (The Plaza) nearby. I would say the style of cuisine is a Japanese Korean hybrid with a commitment to high quality ingredients. We started with the sashimi platter for two @AUD$60 - they took the time to ensure that we were comfortable with all the inclusions before serving it. We are pretty adventurous so we were happy to try the sea urchin and other raw items but I would have balked at the live octopus which was luckily not on offer. We followed this with some fried eggplant and tofu under a dancing cover of bonito flakes. Our mains were scallops in a creamy miso sauce, and black cod. Both absolutely delicious and perfectly presented. The cost for two including drinks was around AUD$250. Although there were only two of us, we were seated at a table for four by the window. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the restaurant has a lovely dim, chilled out vibe. Tani is located in the Avenuel building right near the Lotte store, take the lift to level...

Super disappointing. The restaurant was empty except for our table for 4. The mains came out one at a time over a 10-15 minute period. In fact, two of us ordered exactly the same main- one came first and the other came last. The Chicken Teriyaki and Pork Belly were average. The sirloin steak was dry, barely warm. A place I have been going now and then for well over a decade, which was, and still is, very popular with the business crowd.

The food is fine - Japanese fusion - but nothing out of the ordinary. The concept hasn't changed much either over the years, few selection of course options and a list of ala cart.

The service has improved somewhat over the years, but the interior hasn't changed one bit...
