La Tapera — Restaurant in Palma

We came here with the intention for a nice dinner due to rave reviews. My partner is big on ambience and doesn’t like sitting opposite me, but rather closer to me. We got a good table, but as he moved his chair adjacent to me and the table at most by 2 inches, such that it was closer within reach. We were immediately told off by the waiter. This is so bizarre, it would be understandable if he was blocking the passage way, but it certainly wasn’t the case…. as his back was directly facing the window display, with no need for anyone to pass by. (No hazards) and the slight positioning of the table would certainly not affect revenues coming in, as we did not consume a table larger beyond 2 persons. We were not seated in a long sharing table either.

The reason the waiter told us, was that the table would not be aligned with the table next to it !?! The waiter actually asked us to leave as we refused to have the table aligned in a straight line to the one parallel to it. It was provoking and for some bizarre reason, he even threatened to call the police. I find it bizarre, is the police that accessible for reasons such as this?

I tried to speak to the owner to whom I felt has a kind and calm demeanour. But, unfortunately, with the heated exchange, I couldn’t explain the situation to her- but rather was told to leave to alleviate the situation, which we did. Her decision is understandable.

But, in general -we have found there is a trend of a limited way of thinking i.e. a slight deviation causes a rather hoo-hah, which is completely unnecessary. (Reflective of the hotel we are staying in- which is another bizarre story but has nothing to do with table positioning) So to the owner who responded to this review below, don’t even assume it is the same situation, because it absolutely isn’t. If I even add the story in here , I’m sure even you would agree with the ridicule of it. I’m not going to, as it’s not about your restaurant. But, in this specific case, the table can be moved several inches back, after dinner….

This review is intended to be a fair reflection and constructive criticism to yourselves, especially the waiter. Plus, you should at least hear the story from our side as well and not just from him, since there was no chance to explain it over there. Moreover, the way he was liaising with my partner was ‘plain’ rude and patronising. Lastly, just because of your relations to him, that doesn’t mean he is right and certainly not exemplary of...

Are you vegan? Call them. They go over the roof to please you, plus the place is neat, clean and organized. Their customer service is consistent and personalized. We are vegans and were concerned about their options in their menu but we were surprised to be offered by the attendants to have the chef (Gonzalo) to talk to us, so he came to our table and offered us some items already in the menu that are vegan like: Bread with Tomato, Patatas Bravas, Padrón Peppers, Escalivada….He also made modifications to their paella and pizza “tomate y ajo” and made us a vegan version of those. Best paella we’ve ever had (we are travelers and tried other places around the world before). Of our 7 days in Mallorca, we ate there 7 nights.
