If you’re dreaming of swimming in warm, turquoise waters surrounded by natural beauty, think again before coming here. What should be a stunning coastal gem has been tragically neglected and left to rot under the weight of its own popularity. Tourists and locals flock to this beach for the scenery, but what they don’t tell you is that you’ll be wading through floating plastic bags, discarded bottles, food wrappers, and worse.

It’s a heartbreaking contradiction: the water is warm and inviting, the backdrop idyllic, yet it feels like swimming in a trash bin. Every wave delivers more debris, making it impossible to enjoy without being constantly reminded of human negligence.

The most infuriating part? This mess isn’t just about irresponsible visitors—it’s about a total lack of action from the city. Where are the cleanup efforts? The waste bins? The public awareness campaigns? A location that benefits so heavily from tourism has a duty to preserve its natural assets. Instead, the sea is being treated like a dumping ground, and the silence from the authorities is deafening.

If the city doesn’t step up and take ocean conservation seriously, this beach will quickly become a cautionary tale of what happens when greed and apathy outweigh environmental responsibility. It’s a deeply disappointing and shameful state of affairs. To watch your children swim amongst trash is heartbreaking, let alone the stark reality of our ocean creatures swallowing plastic. What a reality check!!!

Lovely Beach with Room for Improvement

Platja de Cala Mayor is a delightful spot in Palma. The beach's fine, golden sand and clear blue waters make it a favorite for both locals and tourists. It's a fantastic place to relax, swim, or enjoy some sunbathing. The gentle waves are perfect for families with kids, offering a safe and enjoyable swimming experience.

You'll find plenty of amenities here, including clean restrooms, showers, and a variety of beach bars (chiringuitos) serving refreshing drinks and snacks right near the waterfront. The promenade is lined with cafes and shops, providing a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a quick bite before a dip.

However, the beach can get quite crowded, especially during peak season. Arriving early is a good idea if you want to secure a good spot especially that the beach is quite small in size. Also, while the water is generally clean, occasional seaweed can be a minor inconvenience.

Parking is available but can be tricky to find, so consider using public transport if possible. The nearby bus stop offers easy access to the rest of Palma, making it convenient for a day trip.

Overall, Platja de Cala Mayor is a lovely beach with a lot to offer, though a bit of crowd management and improved cleanliness would make it even better.

The beach is not very large, about 200 meters long and 50 meters wide. The sand on the beach is golden and fine, which makes it pleasant for walking and relaxing.

Water and swimming conditions: The water in the Cala Major area is usually clean and transparent, with a gradual entry into the sea, which makes this beach ideal for families with children. The sea here is usually calm, although in windy weather small waves may occur.

Infrastructure: The beach is well equipped: here you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, there are showers and toilets. There are also lifeguards on the beach, which provides additional safety for vacationers.

Entertainment and sports: Various water activities are available in Cala Major, such as jet ski rentals, banana boat rides, parasailing and other types of active recreation. You can also go snorkeling in the coastal area.

Restaurants and bars: Along the promenade and near the beach there are numerous restaurants, cafes and bars where you can try local dishes, seafood and drinks. Many establishments offer a beautiful view of the sea. In short, the...

Cala Major is a beautiful spot, especially if you visit in the right season. April and May are absolutely lovely—warm enough to enjoy the beach but still peaceful and not overcrowded. The water is clear, the atmosphere is relaxed, and you really get to appreciate the beauty of the area without the summer rush. During peak summer months, it gets very busy and can feel a bit too crowded for a relaxing experience. However, things start to calm down again in September and October, and it becomes a great place to visit once more—still warm, but much more enjoyable and laid-back. Definitely worth a visit, especially in spring or early autumn!

Lovely beach, but just too crowded. Really ruins it. Come early in the morning or after 4pm to enjoy and relax. The water was grubby and the sand had a lot of cigarette stubs. It felt safe and secure. There were plenty of facilities and cafes. It was perfect to reach by public bus, number 4 or number 47 from central Palma. I would imagine it is lovely when not high season. Unfortunately it is very built up with hotels and imposing buildings, as this area was built before there were many restrictions. Probably would not return, as there are many other beautiful beaches to explore, but not the worst experience.
