I think I'm done with Yue Chan. It's been my go to place for entertaining guests for years. I've always found the food to be consistently great (although portion sizes are miniscule). Of late though, their service has been consistently - terrible !!
A dinner at a 5* hotel isn't just about the quality of food. At least for me, it's the experience, which in the case of Yue Chuan, has become embarrassing (especially while entertaining).
We had made a reservation and arrived on time, but there was no one at the entrance to greet us. After 10 mins, my guests and I decided to show ourselves to the nearest table of 6.
It took nearly 20 minutes of frantic waving to get someone's attention to simply take down our order. My guests wanted some recommendations, but that required our server to call another member of the staff. I didn't want to wait another half hour, so we went with my regular order.
40 minutes later, the starters began to trickle in, but served cold, including the soup.
We tried to get someones attention for additional servings and drinks - but failed miserably. I've had better luck hailing a cab in NYC during rush hour.
I had to resort to calling the restaurant's landline number to ask them to serve us.
Understandably, this was all a pretty pathetic experience for my guests and I, unfortunately it's been like this for pretty much over the last year or so.
I do love their food though. Can highly recommend the Kung Pao Chicken and Diced Lamb in pepper sauce. I guess I'll stick to ordering on Uber when I crave it, but as for visiting the restaurant at...
Read moreWe walked into Yue Chuan as curious guests anticipating an upscale, authentic Chinese dinner. The ambience upon entry into Kingsbury Hotel promises elegance.
Unfortunately, the optics are the highlight of the entire experience. My wife and I ordered spring rolls and hot & sour soup from the appetizer menu as well as two entrees. The spring rolls came out cold and rolled immensely tight with pastry and minimal vegetable stuffing. The soup was mediocre at best.
Our waiter was absent for the entire dinner. We asked multiple staff members to bring us items like water because he was nowhere to be found. Our entrees eventually arrived after 30+ minutes and both dishes were lukewarm and tasted like something you would expect from a local, hole in the wall restaurant. General Tso chicken had minimal flavor. Chicken chow mein was bland. We packed up both entrees and handed it to someone in need across the street.
This place has all the bells and whistles from the outside but does not deliver in service or quality. They seem to be busy hosting events which may be what keeps them afloat but you couldn’t pay us to come back and eat at this restaurant again.
After 10 days eating all across Colombo and Negombo, we both agreed that this was the lowest standard for service and food quality that we had received. A disappointing end to a fabulous first trip to Sri Lanka. We spent around 11,000+ LKR for us both and spent 2+ hours waiting for cold food and...
Read moreThis restaurant is located in the Kingsbury hotel. We stopped in for Dim Sum brunch on a Sunday. We were surprised at how many Dim Sum items they had available for the all you can eat Dim Sum, there was a large selection. We started with the sweet corn egg soup and it was delicious. It was so good that I actually had a second bowl at the end. The chilli prawn dumplings were great and the Hong Kong fried cuttlefish was excellent. Some of these items are not actually Dim Sum but they were included on the Dim Sum menu so we had them. Our favorite Dim Sum was the lobster dumpling, shrimp and corn dumpling and Pork Shui Mai. The Mango Sago dessert was awesome!
The Dim Sum menu says LKR 6,800 per person on weekends but our receipt showed LKR 13,600 per person. I was fine with this pricing because we live in the USA and go out for Dim Sum frequently but this place offers so much more than the places we have Dim Sum in the USA and it tastes better as well. I highly recommend this place if you are in Colombo and want Dim Sum.
The staff were very nice and friendly and answered all our questions about some of the items on the menu. I don’t have a single complaint about this place and we will be back again next time we are in Colombo
The total bill was a little over Rs19,000...
