Overcrowded, overpriced, and overhyped. We dined at Marten's on a Saturday evening, arriving at 7 pm, peak time, we did have a reservation for our party of 9.
Right away, we could tell that the few servers were clearly overwhelmed. There were way too many patrons to handle. We were eventually seated downstairs in one of the underground levels. This was okay at first as the atmosphere was rather suggestive, almost like a cellar/crypt type of vibe.
The problem with this became evident immediately. The downstairs is actually cold, and the back portion of it, near the restroom where we were seated, was isolated and separated from the rest. To make matters worse, there was very little illumination, and what little there was, was provided by candles, which would be okay, if it wasn't for the fact that several of these candles were scented ones. Not a cool way to eat.
Anyways, on to the service and food. We had to go get our servers upstairs, literally, upstairs, 3 times. One for them to come get our orders after having waited for more than 20 minutes for them, the other to check on the food (more than 40 minutes) and the last time for the check (another 30+ minutes) in between these times, we never saw any of the servers. It got so bad that when we left, none of them even raised their heads to thank us or say good night.
The food. Everything we had was fine. The emphasis here is on the word "fine". There was nothing impressive about the meal, though the price tag certainly was.
This was less than subpar, from the service to the atmosphere and the food, which was passible. We understand being understaffed and working hard, but literally going to collect your server 3 times is unacceptable.
Keep this in mind when choosing to dined at this establishment, especially on a...
Read moreWe passed by the restaurant in Gamla Stan several times, it had a pleasing, inviting appearance and the menu looked like something we would eat. This was our first dining experience in Stockholm and I was worried about the language barrier, but all was fine. You do need to ask for your check at the end of the meal when you are ready. They and other restaurants do not hurry you out like in American restaurants.
Entrees: Roasted filet of reindeer with lingonberry sabayon, port wine sauce, crispy cabbage, potatoes and Vasterbottens cheese cake - I loved the potato and cheese cake and the sauce and cabbage was good but the reindeer was a bit tough to chew and cut with a regular knife. I could have used a steak knife. Seared char with new potatoes, cucumber, apple, asparagus, lemon vinaigrette, seaweed caviar, red chard - This was amazing and huge with the fish and all the veggies. It could have fed both of us. Excellent!!! Desserts: Vanilla ice cream with warm cloudberries - these are yellowish-orange berries - fun and good to try Chocolate truffle - huge and delicious...
Read moreStay away from this place. One of my worst restaurant experiences, ever... I would rather recommend an average fastfood restaurant both regarding service and food. Service: no welcome, getting rushed to the table, another table arriving after us got service before us, we got our first real contact after sitting 15 minutes waiting at the table, it was not crowded. The waiter manages to flee the table without asking if we were ordering the plate with meat or fish. We did not receive water at our table. They managed to get surprised when they served the dish, it was too big to fit the table, chaos ensued... The food: it was edible, but a horrible composition. Never ever order the Assorted Charcuteries plate. It's just meat, a tiny basket of mediocre fries and about 10 olives, It's a joke of a dish and i can't understand who in their right mind would serve it, it was unprofessional. They managed to get the beef nicely done, thats the only positive thing about the dish. The reindeer was dry, the pork was chewy, the sauses looked like crude oil, I...
