This cafe is my absolute favorite cafe in Stockholm! Every single time I visit Stockholm, I go to this place to enjoy a dessert. The cafe is very old and historic, and you can totally feel that vibe inside. It’s decorated very beautifully! All the furniture is in very good condition. The cafe is always clean, the staff does a great job keeping it tidy after customers. They clean the tables right away when people leave. By the way, every time I come here, it’s always busy! Sometimes I’ve had to wait a while to get a table. Also, just a heads-up - it’s better to come earlier if you want a specific cake, because by lunchtime, many of them are already gone. Talking about the cakes, their selection isn’t very big, but every single cake I’ve tried has been super delicious! My two absolute favorites are the Napoleon cake and the Budapest cake. Trust me, they are extremely tasty at this cafe! By the way, I believe that the Napoleon cake is a top seller. A few times when I came around 2-3 p.m., it was already sold out. I also recommend their chocolate mousse cake, which is very tasty as well (people who prefer milk chocolate will love it for sure). As a tea lover, I’m very satisfied with the tea selection at the cafe; there’s a good variety. I really love their Earl Grey tea. But recently, I discovered a new amazing flavor they have - some Swedish tea (I forgot the exact name). If you want to try it, just ask for the Swedish tea and they’ll know which one you mean. The women who work at this place are very nice, by the way. They’re always happy to go through all the cakes with you and help you choose the best one. The prices at this cafe are high, I’m not going to hide that. But by paying a bit more, you definitely get a full, nice experience: very delicious food and a beautiful place to enjoy your time. I absolutely recommend visiting this cafe at least once - for a wonderful experience and...
Read moreIf you're exploring Gamla Stan and looking for a cozy, authentic place to take a fika break, Sundbergs Konditori at Järntorget is a must-visit. I had the pleasure of stopping here during a cruise stop in Stockholm, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my walk through Old Town.
Dating back to 1785, Sundbergs Konditori proudly holds the title of the oldest bakery-café in Stockholm. And as soon as you step inside, you feel that history all around you—from the elegant old-world interior to the display cases filled with traditional Swedish pastries that look almost too pretty to eat.
I sat outside in Järntorget ("Iron Square"), which has been a bustling hub since the 1300s. Today, it's a peaceful square surrounded by charming cafés, and Sundbergs is the jewel among them. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere of Gamla Stan while sipping a rich cup of coffee and enjoying a fresh kanelbulle (Swedish cinnamon bun) or a delicate princess cake.
The service was friendly, the pastries were top-quality, and the location couldn’t be better for people-watching or resting your feet after exploring the cobbled streets. Whether you're a history lover, a pastry fanatic, or just someone in need of a great break in Stockholm, Sundbergs Konditori delivers.
Don’t leave Gamla Stan without experiencing fika the way it’s meant to be—slow, sweet,...
Read moreSundbergs Konditori has been around since 1785 — which means it’s been slinging sugar longer than most countries have existed in their current form. It’s Stockholm’s oldest café, and you feel it the second you walk in. The place smells like history: butter, sugar, maybe a touch of dust — and that’s exactly the point.
Forget flat whites and latte art. This is not where hipsters come to worship their barista gods. The coffee? Mediocre at best. Functional. It’ll keep your eyes open, but you’re not gonna dream about it later. If coffee is your religion, go somewhere else.
But the pastries — that’s where Sundbergs redeems itself. Old-world monsters of cream and pastry: Napoleons, Budapest rolls, princess cake. Heavy, unapologetic, no nonsense.
The crowd? A mix of tourists trying to touch something “authentic” and locals who know this is one of the last places that hasn’t sold its soul to trend menus and oat milk slogans.
And the location — Järntorget in Gamla Stan — couldn’t be better. You sit here, spoon in hand, watching the world stumble past on cobblestones that have seen more drama than any modern...
