If you like themed restaurants, especially all-decked out cutesy restaurants, then Alice Is Coming is the restaurant for you. This place is incredibly cute - from the minute you walk into the restaurant and basically "fall" into the rabbit hole, you know you're in for a treat. This café is located close to XiMen on the second floor across from a shopping center. The outside isn't as decked out as the interior, with only the name of the restaurant and the different suits of cards as background. But upon opening the door and seeing the stairs leading up covered with fake leaves, you're immediately taken into a new world that makes you forget you're even in Taiwan. At least for me.
Everything in this restaurant is detail oriented. From the black and white checkered floor to the figurine of the Ace of hearts standing guard, you're going to fall in love with this café. I spent a few quarters studying "Through the Looking Glass" by Carroll and I was taken back to my days of analyzing Alice just like that. The bookshelves, the giant teacup table, the huge plates, forks, and teacups, the silhouette of Alice on the wall - it's just so amazing that you have to experience this for yourself.
Unfortunately we were so enamored by our surroundings that we failed to look at the menu correctly. We saw a sign for a Christmas dinner for two and assumed that was the popular tea set that they served here. My sister had been dying to try English tea for a long time now, and we thought we were finally going to get it! But nope - the joke was on us.
Christmas Dinner Set for Two: -Drinks: Alcoholic Mixed Drink - pretty to look at, but didn't have much taste to it at all.
-Alice: This was the better drink out of the three that we tried. This was a Sprite mixed with blue curacao and vanilla ice cream. Loved the color of the drink and watching it fizz when we mixed the ice cream with the Sprite. It was pretty sweet, but I thought it was a good dessert drink.
-White Rabbit: Also a Sprite strawberry mix with vanilla ice cream although this was a bit more sour than the Alice. It was pretty, but I definitely preferred the sweetness of the Alice.
Entrees: -Baked Lasagna dish: It was pretty good, but quite heavy. With the cheese and cream sauce, I thought the flavors were a bit too strong. My sister thought it tasted decent, but she couldn't finish much because it was so heavy.
-Baked Chicken: I liked this more than the lasagna. There was also a thick layer of cream and cheese on top, which gave the chicken more flavor. It came with broccoli and some vegetables, and overall wasn't a bad dish, but not something I would normally order.
Dessert: Some cake assortment - a cake with a huge Christmas tree frosting piled on top, a lemon bar with whipped cream and strawberries, and a cute decoration of Alice in chocolate syrup. Looked good, but did not taste good. Frosting tasted artificial, cake was dry, lemon bar was too hard - not good.
We also ordered a curry chicken rice. Sounds good right? But ... what came out was laughable! A small amount of rice with curry around it. And CHICKEN NUGGETS instead of chicken. They seriously need to make sure the customers know it is chicken nuggets and not chicken curry. This is like the frozen chicken nuggets you can find at the grocery store. Laughable and not even good!
Chocolate and banana waffle - It looked good and tasted okay. But not my preferred waffle of choice. Waffle wasn't too sweet and with all that ice cream, banana, syrup, it's enough to give the waffle flavor.
Service is decent. The workers know and expect you to take pictures, so they pretty much just leave you alone after you order and they give you your food. It was really hard to flag them down for some extra utensils and plates since they were sitting behind the counter braiding each...
Read moreIf you love Alice in wonderland then this cafe is for you outside you wouldn't see the Alice in wonderland vibe but once you go in it's a like a totally different world I think that's the idea actually then the entrance to the cafe is full on Alice in wonderland and when you enter the cafe itself it's definitely magical and plus factor they play music from Alice in wonderland. The food is okay (I don't know if the main dish is better but I got dessert and drink and it's not that exemplary) but the food is very pretty plus the staff are wearing Alice dress how cute is that? Anyway location is very accessible just few minutes walk from ximen mrt station and after your cafe experience you can actually enjoy ximen night market just few minutes walk...
Read moreThe food was okay, I like Alice in wonderland so give it credit for the theme. But I definitely think the shop owner needs to work on the renovations and cleanliness of the whole place in general. The staff were dressed in Alice's dress outfit but you could tell the costume has been around for a while with stains (my least expectations for restaurants are for staff to dressed cleanly). Service is so so like other reviews mentioned, but that particular staff may have just been having a bad day, god knows. They gotta work on their kitchen ventilation too, the oily smell was around the restroom area, gets a...
