My experience having breakfast here was not a good one. First of all, you have to queue up and order by yourself. And if you want an extra drink while you are enjoying your breakfast or lunch, you need to stand up and go queue up and order your food again and again.
I don't know why they have a weird policy like that. Why would I pay 10-15-30 plus dollars for my lunch/breakfast, and every time I have to stand up and go to the counter to order again and again???
and another meaningless point is they only have one cashier, which means if it is the busy time, you need to queue up and wait maybe 5 or more minutes. and the shop is so small and so packed that it makes things much more meaningless.
The place is so small and so packed, we literally had breakfast with a lady next to me, sneezing, talking and enjoying her breakfast, and making sounds while consuming her bread.
Why would the shop owner be so greedy to put a lot of chairs and tables side by side? This is not an enjoyable way of having your food. Maybe very young people enjoy this kind of dining experience but this is not healthy because you can contract a cold or another disease from the person next to you. and also it is not enjoyable because the place is very crowded, a little noisy and also It made me feel like we are having breakfast in a school cafeteria.
We enjoyed the bread and the materials used for the breakfast. So I'm not gonna complain about it. And also the prices are reasonable when compared to other places in the area.
But every time you want to eat or drink something more, you need to stand up, go downstairs (if you are on the 2nd floor) and leave your table and leave your bags and leave your belongings and go queue up. I'm not saying that the shop is not safe, but I don't understand why they have that kind of meaningless policy.
There are more than enough waitresses in the shop, but when I raised my hand to give my order, the lady approached me and without a smile told me to go to the cashier and order by myself. The cashier doesn't speak enough english. what is the purpose of having somebody getting the orders without enough english skills when your customers are mostly foreigners??? Speechless.
Maybe I couldn't catch it, but it is not very clear which dishes are served cold and which dishes are served warm. Maybe I didn't see it.
The prices are subject to 7% tax, but I'm not sure about the 10% service charge because they didn't give me a receipt. The problem with the receipt is you have no proof in your hands about your order and considering the cashier and some of the staff doesn't understand english properly, then you have to use maybe google translate or get very tired while you're explaining that your order is wrong... it happened to me. when I ordered two big cups of juice, they both came in a small cup. Is this a strategy to make the customers pay more but get less? I hope not. and do I have to stand up and fix the problem by myself, tell them that my juice supposed to be big but served in a small cup? if I am paying $6 for a juice, I think they should be able to bring me in the proper cup. Is this a service failure or done on purpose?
I'm not complaining about the food because we enjoyed the food, I enjoyed my juice, but I don't want to pay that much when I am being stuffed in a small place. there are enough waitresses in the place to take your orders, but they want you to stand up and wait in line and give your orders to the cashier. I realized that the tables are a bit dirty and no one cleans it after the guests leave the table.
So basically the place is very packed, the seating are placed in a very unhealthy way where you sit down basically with a guy next to you arm to arm and when the waitresses chit chat with each other you are forced to stand up and wait in line and order your food. No, I don't think that the tourists or the local people deserve a place with that management style. There are different options in the area where you sit comfortably with enough space and enjoy your day.
Sorry, I'm...
Read moreThe owner was kind enough to respond and in fairness I thought I should do a re-write of my review, and I’ve added another star. TLDR: If you want your “sour”dough to have the classic tanginess, this bread isn’t for you. If you like a mild flavor with huge open crumb, then give it a try. FULL REVIEW: Some sourdough breads are more sour than others, and that tanginess is one of the main draws for a lot of people, but not all people. If you DO want that tanginess, then try another bakery. Likewise if you want a small-medium hole size (the loaf I bought had multiple holes as large as 5cm – that’s just too large for me). All of this is of course a matter of taste. There is skill and care that’s gone into the making of their bread, but their bread just doesn’t suit my taste. Next time I buy from the other bakery, I’ll see how holey the bread is and what the loaf weighs in at and update the review a final time.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: TLDR: People who desire at least a hint of sourness in their sourdough bread will be disappointed with their overpriced bread. FULL REVIEW: If the quality of a bakery can be measured by the quality of their bread, then there's room for improvement at Bartels. Their loaves of bread look fantastic and the crust has a nice bite and chew! The crumb is also quite soft, but unfortunately the massive holes in the crumb make it difficult to use the bread for sandwiches. The bread does have some flavor but it does not have any of the sourness, a reason why a lot of people - myself included - choose sourdough over commercially yeasted loaves. The price for a loaf of Bartels sourdough is also about 65% higher (currently 250 baht) than the best sourdough loaf I have found in Bangkok (150 baht) thought the loaf was also about 10-15% larger. All things considered, the bread is much better than you'll get from any grocery store, but nowhere near the quality one should get considering the price. I'll go back and get another loaf in a few months to see if there are any changes, and will update my review...
Read moreI recommend this place to people who have whole day to wait for food. Sandwiches here is surely nice contrast to the wait time and service. This place used to be our go to and we did leave a very nice review when it first opened as we would like to see a good cafe goes well. But It has drastically changed on quality of drinks and service. Everything takes forever to come every time we went there.
My partner really likes this place as the sandwiches are delicious and I also tried to give them a chance as they have messed up my take-away coffee order once (photo attached). I texted them on FB as a friend that I’d like to see their service improve. They offered me a free drink , I replied them almost a week after and they just ghosted. I went back a few times in the last two months, hoped they would improve yet it’s getting worse and worse in the service. I’ve worked in hospitality before and I’ve seen how unprofessional they have handles the situation.
Lastly, I just went back today and we have waited an hour for our sandwiches (we got it the second time we went to ask for it). The first time they said they are making it and the second time after another 15 mins and they had no idea what was on our order. One of the staffs gave us an aggressive look and my partner experienced the same thing while waiting for the food. I’d like to say that if you’re not ready to handle the customers complain, don’t work in this field. They gave us a carrot cake as an apology but just so you know, we don’t want the free stuff if you don’t want to improve the service. I have given this place so many chances and I don’t see any point of supporting them...
