Down Under Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Khlong Toei Nuea Subdistrict

I'm quite honestly stunned that this place has a 4.6 star rating, until I realised the majority of reviews are written by males. Visited this bar for an AFL game around the Easter weekend and can quite easily say it's the worst Aussie themed bar I've been to. If I ever felt that uncomfortable in a bar in Australia itself, I certainly wouldn't return. The majority of patrons are those of the older gentlemen variety who clearly come to Thailand for a certain angle of their tourism and seem to behave like it's still 1950. Cat calling, antagonising, belittling any females who dare to try and enjoy sport, it had the lot. As for the staff themselves who are forced to pander to these patrons, I can't say their behaviour was much better. When we enquired about food upon arrival (around midday) we were told the chef wasn't on til 1pm. A little bit later we notice one of the dinosaur patrons be delivered a burger and fries and so again enquired about ordering food, only to be told the chef wasn't in. By blatantly pointing at the nearby food, they sheepishly and hesitantly provided us with menus and we then overheard them saying to "hide the rest of the menus". Weird business model, but sure. We decided on just a couple of starter items and about 10 minutes later were advised they had "run out" of one of the options, which is fine, it happens. We confirmed we'd still like to go ahead with the remainder of the order (two serves of chicken skewers). These took around an hour to arrive. At one point, we thought maybe they were ordering through Grab (similar to Uber eats), which honestly, at that point in time would have been perfectly fine, we were just hungry! Sadly, this driver looked to delivering food to the brothel across the street. That's right, when you're not watching the sport on TV you can have prime position to view the clientele and staff of the establishment across the lane. Needless to say, we downed our food and after handing our money to the staff to count, we left shortly after. We'd barely made it to the end of the street when one of the staff starts running at us to chase us for money for the food we'd ordered but they'd run out of. In short, if you're a female with any level of self respect, avoid at all costs. The other bars on Sukhumvit Road showing your sport of choice may still be frequented by similar patrons and bar girls, but they're still 1000 times better, and welcoming of orders for beverages and food at any time. The one positive, my first beer was icy cold, as in almost slushy icy cold. That said, I'd rather drink a VB that's been out in the sun for hours than return...

Suzie and her staff are wonderful hosts, not ‘pushy’ in any way, thoughtfully provided mosquito repellent, very reasonable food and drink prices, loved the meat pie- hot and tasty, a genuine Aussie pie , they give a generous serving of chips, or you can order salad - also loved the pork basil mince fried egg on rice, the chicken satay with the pickled sides was so good, on one of my visits a couple of large plates of free food was available. Aussie themed bar with plenty of sport on the tv screens and of course music playlists. Close to nana, the entrance to soi 7/1 has girls and ladyboys standing in front of the handful of bars there and trying to entice you to sample their wares, if you know what I mean! 😂😳😂🤣 Not a problem , just politely decline and you won’t have a problem (or accept, up to you)🙈🙉🙊🤣😂 Check it out if you are...

Your experience here will depend on what you are looking for. If you want to relax at a regular bar with good food and drinks, this place is for you.

They have western beer here, which is a plus. I want to say that I had Guiness here, but I'm not positive.

I am positive that, after a month of eating only Thai food, I desperately needed a taste of home. I then had what felt like the best cheeseburger of my life at this bar. I returned later for another and had good spring rolls from here, too.
