Savory Malatang小食记 (Terminal21) — Restaurant in Khlong Toei Nuea Subdistrict

MSG alert! Malatang places are super popular in Singapore but in a sense rarer in Thailand so when I saw this outlet, I thought of giving it a try.

Price is reasonable and variety of foods anre interesting but that’s about all for the good stuff.

First off, the bowls and tongs for choosing food are not kept in a sterilised environment but out in the open.

Second, the sauces are very limited and the sesame oil had a weird yellow colour like it was kept for a long time or got mixed with other sauces. The soy sauce was also like REALLY salty.

But thirdly is the worst point - the soups, omg the soup. I am quite resistant to MSG but this is the first time I got very thirsty after drinking just a few sips and then after 30mins - I got a HEADACHE from the soup! I had the tomato soup so I thought it wouldn’t be so bad compared to my partner who had the clear soup. His headache was more severe than me and we had to drinks lots of water afterwards.

Welp. Lesson learnt so never again...

Food is good but waiter at the cashier is so annoying. Me and my sister can’t speak in Thai so well. But the cashier girl acts like she didn’t want to talk to us, didn’t say anything, and just pointed with her hands. But we think she did everyone like that….. but nottttt. She did it only to us. After we finished paying, she served the next thai girl with sweet voice and said thank you also. We thought it was because the cashier was Thai and it was easy for thai customers to communicate in Thai. Later we found that she is not Thai and she can speak English well. We asked other waiter about her name. Her name is Moe Thae. Shop owner needs to teach that girl about...

We used to come here often because when the shop was new, the malatang tasted really good. Unfortunately, the quality has gone down a lot. Now the flavor isn’t the same, and it feels like there’s too much MSG — we always end up very thirsty afterwards.

They also increased the prices quite a bit. Before, it was charged only by weight, but now they add extra fees (20 THB for sauce and 5 THB for soup). It doesn’t feel worth it anymore.

What’s disappointing is that it seems the shop recently bought fake Google reviews. A restaurant that truly offers good food at a fair price wouldn’t need to do that.
